Removing headlight switch on '56 Country Sedan

Hi all-

I suspect that this is the 1000th time someone has asked about this, but I'm having trouble getting the button on the switch to release rod controller. I had a trouble getting the original switch to release the rod but with a little effort, I got it out so I could replace it. I ordered a new switch from Dennis Carpenter but when I inserted my old rod into the switch, again it wouldn't release it again. I've looked carefully at the rod itself and it looks perfect. What am I doing wrong?
