Fuel problem- When restarting hot motor
Hey, When my engine is hot and then shut off for a short time, then I go to restart it-- the engine quits after about 100 yards. Let it set for 5 minutes or so and it takes off like nothing ever happened!! It acts like the gas shutoff is closed--but but it is open. What the ---?.

Re: Fuel problem- When restarting hot motor
Sometimes in extreme heat, the 10% ethanol fuel boils in the carburetor, causing a vapor lock of sorts. Try turning off the gas valve before you shut the engine down. Let the car run out of gas. When you restart, open the fuel valve and cool, fresh gas should cool the carb down enough to avoid the boiling.
The long term fix is to add some Mystery oil or diesel fuel to the gas/gasohol to raise the boiling point. If the problem persists, also check for blockage in the fuel line and make sure your fuel cap is venting properly. |

Re: Fuel problem- When restarting hot motor
I had a similar problem in Colorado when the air temp was in the upper 90's (most summer days). The problem is vapor lock caused by the fuel boiling in the carb.

Re: Fuel problem- When restarting hot motor
I have heard of people adding multiple paper gaskets between the carb and intake manifold to insulate it some. Not sure how well it works?

Re: Fuel problem- When restarting hot motor
Have you tried gas with no ethanol or lower % of ethanol ?
Any chance you have some winter gas left over from Michigan? NC has a bunch of stations! Click the "details" tab on right side, not all grades are ethanol free. http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=NC Quote:

Re: Fuel problem- When restarting hot motor
BrianBurkert is right on the money. Add a little MMO, ATF, maybe even castor oil (which is my favorite-smells good when it burns) to your gas tank at each fillup. Not only will adding a little oil raise the boiling point of your gasoline to help prevent the dreaded vapor lock, it will also help to lube the top side of your engine. Good luck!!
