1932 Drag Link Adjustment

Just to confirm. Bottom out the adjustment nut and compress the spring all the way, then back off 1/2 turn and install the cotter key?

Will there be a little movement?

When do you replace the spring?

A firm contact between the surfaces of the ball studs and those in the drag link is not the same thing as bottoming out the spring less a half turn. Sounds like a sure fire way to induce premature wear unless your springs are really tired.


Unless there is excess wear on the ball studs, there would be no movement fore and aft of the drag link through the entire right-to-left-to-right steering cycle.


The springs were 1 1/32" when new. Anything less that 1" would be increasingly suspect.

Only in the case of a shock, such as your left wheel dropping into a pot hole at speed. The purpose of the springs is to eliminate fore and aft movement under normal driving circumstances.

Mine must be worn because I have a little movement back and forth when the wheel is off the ground and wiggled.
