Default Replacement 6V Battery

I thought I remembered a post on this site saying that you can find a suitable Model A 6V battery replacement at Rural King (maybe a tractor battery?), but I can’t find the post on this site.

Where do you buy your 6V batteries?

I see this one at Tractor Supply.

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...y-duty-battery

Is this any better than the Rural King battery that is half the cost?

Default Replacement 6V Battery

I don’t know much about batteries. What spec’s should I be looking for? I don’t want to buy something cheap and won’t last a while.

I bought a group 1 6V battery at Tractor Supply for about $110 a couple of years ago. Happy with it so far.

I’m told tractor supply is having difficulty getting batteries from their supplier. I’ve been waiting 2 months.

Doesn't the Ford dealer have replacement batteries for Model A's? Ha ha.

I had to just replace a Model A battery on one of my cars. It was putting out just 4.5 volts telling me that one of the cells failed by shorting out. It would still crank the engine and sound the horn but the car would not run properly. I would always use a battery maintainer and this particular battery lasted for 12 years. I also run a 6 volt positive ground single terminal alternator. This particular battery came from a regional tractor store by my area called Blain's Farm & Fleet. I wasn't clear on who the actual manufacturer of this battery is but it maybe a Globe or Johnson Controls manufacture.

I shopped around for a new one at Autozone, OReily's, who all had them for around the $100 range. Problem there is that many were stocked in the back room and are already a year or two old but still would have the store warrentee from the date of purchase.

I ended up going back to the Farm & Fleet and was able to trade the old core in and purchase a fresh battery for $89. We will see if this one lasts 12 years as well.

If there is one in your area, Batteries Plus carries the 6v group 1 Duracell battery. You get 10% off if you pay online, then go pick it up.

I've bought two 6v tractor batteries from Tractor Supply and they are fine. They stock them as they also fit early tractors. The one pictured is not a 6v tractor battery. The last one last year was around $79.00 but I'm sure with everything going up in price they are higher now. Last summer I bought one in Wisconsin at Farm & Fleet for $56.00. I don't know how broad Farm & Fleet's market is. I've found any of the Auto stores are all over $130.00 or higher. Get it from someone that is into selling the farm market.

Quite a few companies still stock the group 1 battery. Even the standard group 2 batteries for later Ford cars are available but more expensive since they are larger and have higher cold cranking amperage.

We don't have Rural King stores in my neighborhood. If they have the CT1-3 then that seems to be a group one battery with 3 cells. They don't seem to use the BCI group system in there battery line. Their price seems to be a too good to be true price at $50. At the cost of shipping, I'll not try one and just let the Rural King customers use them. The average price for a group 1 battery is around $100 give or take $10 in my part of the world.

I Use Rual King batterys in all my 6 volt cars 2 Model "A"s and 39 Chevy. I put maintainers on them in the winter good for 5 years , got up to 6 years on 1 battery., after 5 years I just replace them, paid $49.00 plus tax . Did have a problem w/1 but got an exchange within the 1st year. Best priced I could find! The battery i bought is a CT 1-3 625 CCA.

The neg post on one side and the Pos is on the other side.

The difficulty in getting 6 volt stuff, especially in more remote areas is a big part of why I converted to 12 v.
