Default Tie down wheels or axles when towing

Enclosed trailer. 50 miles. Should I tie down the 4 wheels or the axles? Towing Cabriolet.

I have seen just the axles or both. If done properly I really don't think you'll have any issues. I would rather not use anything on restored wheels.

I no longer tow/trailer but…
I tied both. They make some over-the-tire “bonnets” that don’t involve the steel wheels.

Why don't you cross tie? What is the disadvantage in doing this.

That is what I have been doing for both the front and rear.

Crossing the straps is effective only when both straps create tension to hold the load in place. If one strap become loose, the other becomes unless as well.

Your cargo, your decision. Feeling lucky ??

Truly,

I won't argue with 15 years of experience, I suspect your talent came from helping Noah.

The photo of the '34 Roadster has a third, center strap pulling straight. Better insurance.

I've had the over-the-tire straps loosen, so I now tie just the axles. 2 on the front, 2 on the rear trying to pull the car apart. I strap it down at home, then down the road a short way just to be sure all is OK. I also check them for tightness whenever I stop, just to be sure.

I like to see the wheels chocked and the axles tied down.

Cross strapping a car in place has Never made any sense to me.
Strapping straight on all 4 corners will hold a vehicle as tight
as you could hope for.

I use straps that go over each tire with side straps stitched on them that will keep them on the tires even if they become loose. This way, nothing touches painted surfaces. I can load a car and strap it to the floor in about 4 minutes time-easy, fast, and safe. I have towed Model A's cross country many, many times using these straps with zero issues.

Lightbulb Tie down wheels or axles when towing

I always am thinking of other options ….

This is a six point tie down:

Any strap can come loose - but if you maintain
your equipment and check your straps - it is
not an issue.

Never move?? If one strap gets loose the car will move toward the other making it loose. Never cross tie.

diagonals mainly help on cornering- straight tie downs can allow the car to "hop"

much more strength in a diagonal- if you dont believe me, take a look at the deck built on the back of your house. if it was built correctly, it will have diagonal supports.

I have hauled for 40 years and always use straight tie downs with no hop! A good friend was transporting his AACA Ford truck to a show when one of the diagonals came loose. That in turn made the other diagonal totally useless in fact it pulled the truck sideways into the side of the enclosed trailer. That sure messed up the paint. Granted he said it was more than likely his fault forgot to lock the strap but the point is if they had been straight he would have still had three corners holding the truck when the one came loose!
