Ford Shock i.d. help
I have a Ford Shock, part # appears to be AJ-18077-E, it's on a hot rod so. Trying to figure out what to order for replacement, can anyone make sense of this part # ? Also the car was built in the early 1960's so safe to assume it's a pre 1964 part.
Thanks in advance. |

Re: Ford Shock i.d. help
Are you in CAN? There is no HOME-20 showing.
AJ-18077-E does not show in FORD CATALOGING (US) CROSS-OVER. The shocks are stamped FORD of CANADA so they may be listed in a FORD of CANADA PARTS LISTING. Do you want just STD SHOCKS or something custom? You will have to measure the travel of the shock and end types and look in a SHOCK CATALOG to find the original application/cross-over. Did the travel seem to be OK when functional? If a straight axle does it have a travel stop to prevent damage to the shock if a pothole is hit? Maybe a photo of the front suspension? Re: Ford Shock i.d. help
Thanks, yes I'm in Canada, I was wondering if that might have been a a "Canada only" part number, ok I'm just curious, just teases me with a legible part number that I can't search lol.
Yes I found a comprehensive Monroe shock chart & found a suitable replacement, except the lower bushing is 5/8 not 1/2, but I'll just put a sleeve in there for that. Thanks for the help & explanation for why that Ford part number wasn't showing anything. |

BTW - That is not a SERVICE PN but an ENGINEERING ID NO. It has to be converted into an actual PN.

Re: Ford Shock i.d. help
Ford started using "aircraft type" shock absorbers in late 1947. Kits were produced that would retrofit back to 1942 using the same kit. They may have been from original installation or from a kit. It's hard to say at this point in time. Ford of Canada did a lot of things differently but they followed the Dearborn lead for the most part.
Houdaille shocks were falling out of favor after the war. They took maintenance and they were getting more expensive to produce than the modern rivals. There were plenty of aftermarket shocks and kits available for Ford cars after the war. I looked up kits for the cars up to 1953 and basic shock absorber part numbers. The basic front shock P/N is 18045 with either 8A or 1A prefixes depending on year of manufacture. The kit for a complete front shock assembly in 1951 is APA-18124-A. After 1953 the prefixes started to change to the B prefixes that carried through the rest of the 1950s. The number you have there may not be for a Ford car or the Canandian part numbers are different. Last edited by rotorwrench; 06-28-2022 at 11:40 AM. |
