Replacing Header Wood on a 31 Murry Sedan
I'm preparing to replace the wooden header in a 1931 Murry 4 Door Slant Window Sedan and have a question about doing that.
I've heard there may be some upper sheet metal cutting to remove the old wooden header, and rewelding the metal cutting after the new header is installed. Has anyone heard about this, (is cutting and welding necessary) and if you were involved with ever replacing a wooden header on a 31 Slant Window are there any pointers you can provided to me. also: Recommendations for the best Model A Ford replacement top wood Company. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me with this question. Last edited by California Charlie; 07-02-2021 at 05:26 PM. Reason: SPELLING |

Re: Replacing Header Wood on a 31 Murry Sedan
Charlie,
The metal header cap on 160A-B- and C's and Victoria is the same. They are welded on each side of the cap and leaded over the seam from the factory. Just cut the weld only. Lift off the header moulding and lift up the top material. The cap comes off from the front forward. The cap is held in place by the weld and the top moulding. Once off, you can then see how the wood header comes out through the front. In your case, it will be easier because you are replacing top bows as well. Your whole top material will come off to replace the bows. Classic Wood in North Carolina will have all the wood you will need. Caution: Save your header wood and bows to use as patterns to finish off your new wood exactly as the factory made it and it will fit very nice. Pay close attention to pre-drilled holes in the new wood as they can be slightly off plus the holes for the dome light wire holes and where the visors were hung. When you get all the wood in including the header back in, then put the cap back in place and weld back as close to the way it was done at the factory with as low heat (Tig) as possible. Finish off with some epoxy filler in place of lead and you will have a nice product. Good Luck. |

I'm back with another question to ensure I'm on the same page with the wooden header replacement.
In the photo I've added, have I identified the Metal Header Topper and where the cuts should be made on each side of the vehicle? Hopefully the photo will come through. Thanks once again |

Yes, that is it. Put some sandpaper to the seam so you can see the weld. Dale.

Re: Replacing Header Wood on a 31 Murry Sedan
There was a great article in the "Town Sedan Times" some years ago on how do do replace the header. Unfortunately I don't this I have that issue any longer. Maybe someone else can help recall the issue.
