Flathead cooling fans
On my 39 I'm going with a 12V system. Looking @ altenators and adding an electric fan/shroud. I know there are people on the site that don't like electric fans on a flat head, but let the discussion begin.
If your running an altenator, what configuration are you using for your fan and why There are some good ideas out there, lets hear about them. |

Re: Flathead cooling fans
GM 60 amp + Spal. Used Spal because they pull more air than others, and are thinner than most.

Re: Flathead cooling fans
New to the flathead motor I was informed to get the best radiator I can get. the radiator shop suggested to go with mechanical fan then wanting to go 12 volts I had my gen changed to 12 volts. Now I'm not pleased with the output of the gen. I ordered an alternator with a pulley to fit the fan on. As far as the fan I had a fair four blade showing rust and not trusting it I replaced it with a 6 blade abs fan from speedway. So far 160 has been my max temp. I have 180 thermostats and 12 lbs. cap on the rad. Been driving to and from work up a good hill, keeping up with modern cars. KEEP TRUCKING DAVE

Re: Flathead cooling fans
If you have 180 stats, why are you only getting 160? Must be quite a bit of leakage thru those stats or your temp gauge is wrong.

Re: Flathead cooling fans
I've got an 8BA in my '36. The radiator was recored with a 5-row core. Absolutely no room for an engine driven fan. I've fitted 2 second-hand electric fans on the front of the radiator covering as much of the core as possible. In summer I run 160 thermostats & 180 in winter. I use a toggle switch to control the fans & even in summer hardly ever need to turn them on. If anything it runs a bit on the cool side. The car is a daily driver & spends time in fairly heavy traffic. I simply keep an eye on the gauge & respond accordingly. One thing I did (using rubber conveyor belt trimmed to size) was seal the top edge of the grille to the rad top tank to prevent air by-passing the radiator core. The car has survived 2 hot summers without ever boiling.

Re: Flathead cooling fans
I'm using a Powermaster alternator with a Spal fan & a Spal fan-pwm-v3 control, this control modulates the fan to the engine temp & and
is programable. This really cuts down on the noise as the fan is only running at the speed needed. This setup is not on my flathead. It is on a 48 desoto with the unmentionable sbc but original radiator. Very pleased with it no heating problem whatsoever. I forgot to mention it has A/C also. Gary. |

Thank's for the input gentlemen. Gary, my father had a 48 Desoto, I love the big chrome front end. The Black and white pictures are what I got.

Re: Flathead cooling fans
Last fall I put a 6 volt fan on my `35. I don't use it all of the time and don't need it. But when I am sitting at a traffic light in 90+ degree weather I flip it on and it helps. Sometimes I feel I am paranoid over engine temperature as it has never boiled, but I can't help keeping an eye on it.
To me the electric fan is good insurance and I feel better having it. Shadetree

Re: Flathead cooling fans
This is the 6 blade industrial fan I adapted to my 35 roadster. Does a good job and makes no more noise than the original 4 blade. I don't know who manufactured the blade. G.M.

Re: Flathead cooling fans
I am using a puller Spal fan with a 185 degree thermostat switch and manual override. I have an 80 amp GM alternator on a 12 V system. Not using radiator hose thermostats in the summer. Have had no problems
