Re: NEED help
First you need to determine if and why the engine overheated and if it did, repair it an do a trans service.

Re: NEED help
If you really want to be sure of preventing engine overheating, I recommend the following:
Remove radiator and burn off the top tank and rod out the tubes (carefully), then solder back on and do a pressure flush. Do not re-install yet. Locate every threaded water pipe plugs on the engine. Remove water pump completely. Pull out one plug in the back and install a temporary garden hose fitting and connect garden hose. Turn on water full blast and watch water blast out of the water pump return. You should see lots of rust and scale. Continue until water runs out clean. now plug that side up and go the the other side and repeat procedure. If there are any water pipe plugs in the heads, get them too. Take out your thermostat and test it. If it is bad replace. Put water pump and radiator back in and fill with proper amount of water/coolant mix. Change your ATF. Overheated ATF is no good. May want to check your spark plug wires and see if they are still pliable. If the heat has caused them to become petrified, replace them by all means. |

Re: NEED help
I put a elce fan cool in front of the radiator and trans cooler in front of the Radiator all is staying cool now. I checked the trans out I think the pump is gone not pumping and oil out the lines. Looking for a good trans now.

Re: NEED help
Would be best if you could find someone to rebuild original transmision. Then flush lines and replace radiator. Transmission coolers in radiators are impossible to clean. You could replace with a stand alone cooler.

Re: NEED help
a temp of 220 is hot, but should not keep the transmission from working.

Re: NEED help
If you burn transmission fluid - you need to replace it.
If you overheat a transmission - you have damaged something - heat kills. Jim |

Several years ago, the outfit that serviced the original 2 speed transmission in my early '60's Mercury recommended an auxiliary cooler, to be mounted on the front of the radiator. I feel like it was a good investment. When I replaced the original radiator with a new and better aluminum unit, I moved the aux. tran. cooler from the radiator to the back of the grille, about 6 inches ahead of the radiator. I figured this helped cooling even more, and is still relatively inconspicuous. I'm not familiar with the complete stand alone units but they sound like something worth investigating. |
