Waterpump replacement
I have my car now running but it appears the waterpump has now seized. Does anyone have any advice for replacing the pump or any , tips, tricks or things I should be aware of?

Re: Waterpump replacement
What kind of fan is on it? That can determine how you proceed.

Re: Waterpump replacement
Do a search as this was covered recently. If a 2 blade fan you should be able to get the pump out WITHOUT removing the radiator. Loosen radiator rods, remove hood, undo top hose connection, tilt radiator forward towards light bar, INSERT piece of cardboard to cover face of radiator, remove 4 w/pump nuts, fanbelt, remove pump. Others may have different suggestions. If you rebuild your pump fine, if not get a good leakless AND the new 2 blade aluminum fan.

Re: Waterpump replacement
And when remounting the pump use the look-alike bolts A 8501-MBM ( snyders) which make future removals easier than using studs.

Sometimes after setting a while you just need to grab the fan and turn the pump, as it may have stuck from stting for a long time. |

Re: Waterpump replacement
I am pretty sure the pump was turning about 2 weeks ago, but I can't be sure because i was focused on trying to start the car. I didn't want to force it to turn but I willl give it.
The current fan has 2 blades, and I was thinking of one of those leak less pumps. I was really hoping there was a way around having to tilt or remove the radiator to remove the pump. Thank Mike |

Re: Waterpump replacement
I would be very careful with the fan. Forcing the fan to turn by pushing or pulling on the fan blades can easily bend or break the already fragile , if original fan.

Re: Waterpump replacement
I think you need to remove the fan from the car.
I have done this before without even tilting the radiator by removing all four nuts and tilting the pump laterally off the studs. Others seem to have had different experience and discount the possibility. Removal of the radiator is not that hard. During the last discussion I seem to have counted 2 rods, 4 shell bolts/nuts, two bolts holding to the cross member (oh and keep track of any possible washers/shims in this area to be sure you put it back as it was) and the sundry clamps and hoses. Get this offending bad boy onto your bench where you can have your way with it. A rebuild is not hard, an outright replacement is possible. And if an original fan, you might do yourself the statistical favor and replace it with new aluminum - although you may open yourself up to some interference headaches with the new or old pump nose (see other threads.) You can check this while on the bench. I encourage EVERYONE to work on their own cars - there is satisfaction in the increase in one's capability and self esteem thereby. Re: Waterpump replacement
Put a piece of cardboard in front of the fan to protect the radiator fins. I'd drain the coolant and tilt the radiator forward. It's just two rods and a hose. If I remove the radiator, I leave the shell attached.

Re: Waterpump replacement
If you have numbers on the old belt, try to match them. If not just order the correct belt from your favorite parts seller. I haven't had any problem changing belts, but some people report having to remove the generator to get the new belt over all the pulleys. Since the generator has the fewest degrees of belt "wrap", it is the first pulley to slip the belt OFF, and the last pulley to slip the belt ON.
