Remove this bolt?
I have never drilled out a bolt, but this may be the time. Someone long ago decided to replace the correct nut/bolt with this and it will not budge. The metal is too soft for visegrips and too scarred to hold any socket I can find...
It's been soaked with WD-40 for several days. Ideas? If drilling is the way to go, any suggestions? I don't want to drill too deep! Thanks! |

Re: Remove this bolt?
My first attempt to remove that would be vice grips or cut a slot in it with a hack saw or angle grinder and use an impact driver on it. You might get lucky if it has been soaking for a while. If that fails, THEN you are down to drilling it out. Grind off the end so it is flat and parallel to the face, carefully mark the centre and start drilling with a small bit first and working up from there.
BTW, if you don't know how long that screw is, buy a replacement and put a tube over the drill so you can't go too deep.

Re: Remove this bolt?
What bolt is it, picture is not showing. WD-40 is not a penetrating oil, unless you buy their brand of penetrating oil. It's a water displacement (WD)/lube.

Re: Remove this bolt?
Find a nut that will fit over the messed up one then weld it on . when it cools it will come right out . No problem. If you don't weld find someone who can. It's an easy fix just shield the fuel tank and the like .

Re: Remove this bolt?
Mix acetone and automatic transmission fluid about 1/2 and 1/2 and put in a pump oil can. Mix as needed as acetone tends to evaporate. Much better penetrant than the letter/number brand and cheaper. A little heat alternated with penetrant baptisms often helps.

Re: Remove this bolt?
Great ideas by members but if you do chose to drill it out . I would first get the surface flat and locate center of the bolt. I would then center punch the bolt right in the center. Then drill a small hole to the length of the bolt and drill a bit larger hole. As you drill closer to the size of the bolt diameter you may loosen up the bolt to unscrew it . You can also use a center punch to push in the thread sides and get some needle nose pliers in there to unscrew the left overs. Now worse case is you drill to appropriate size 1/4-20 would be #7 drill etc and tap it out.
I would also recommend Kroil its awesome stuff and truly a rust buster
