Default Need help diagnosing new symptoms

Guys,

I've got a new problem. The car seems to idle just fine, but when I put any pressure on the gas pedal, the engine dies. What's going on?

Sounds like lack of gas. Has the carb been taken apart and cleaned?

Like the switch is turned off or running out of gas off?

I would suggest you open the fuel line at the carb and see if you are getting a strong gas stream from the fuel line. There may be a blocked fuel line from rust in the tank.

Just in case you are new to Model A's, have you advanced the spark upon the car's starting?

By "strong stream" we mean like a young man proudly writing his name in the snow, not an old man laboring to keep his shoes dry.

Check spark plugs if black sooty clean or replace. You might have run gas too rich.

Is this something that has just happened,, or,, has it been going on,, or,, are you just getting this monster up and running ??
It sounds like it is just adjusted a bit too lean,, where are the carburetor adjustments set at ??

The problem just developed when I tried to replace the coil. The old coil tested inconsistently so I bought a new one. I could never get the car to even start with the new coil, so I put the old one back in. That's when the problem started. The car idles just fine, but when I step on the accelerator, the engine dies.

Can you push the gas "slowly" and it will keep running??? If so, it would seem like something in the carb is plugged. If you can't keep it going by pushing slowly, them it may be electrical. I am not a expert on these sort of things so this is just my $.02 worth.

I'm thinking the problem could be a connection in the coil primary circuit, such as the short wire between the distributor plates, or a connection in the terminal box on the firewall, or ignition switch.

Is your spark blue or is it orange when you put a spark plug lead near the cylinder head?
An orange tone spark would indicate a WEAK spark, possibly from your problem coil, but also possibly from a weak condensor.
