Registration Cost Question

Hey All,

I just got back from my Wendsday's Model A breakfast run with some of the local model A guys and something came up that has me totally baffled and perhaps someone has a reason for it.

We were all standing outside by out cars talking and the subject of registration came up. Everyone else paid more than I did, which doiesn't make sense.We ALL live within 5-miles of each other in the High Desert and we all have Model A's but the cost of registration is all over the map.

Can anyone tell me why the prices are so different?

In California, your Registration Renewal Notice shows the following Fees:

Registration Fee;
License Fee;
Weight Fee;
Special Plate Fee;
County/District Fee; and
Owner Responsibility Fee (whatever that is).

The Registration Fee (RF) is the highest and, unless I’m wrong, the License Fee (LC) is based on the value of the vehicle reported when you first bought or registered the car. The RF is fixed and the LC decreases annually. I also have a County/District Fee of $10.

The Registration Card only shows the total Fees you paid. You should compare the Vehicle Registration Renewal Notice with your Model A friends to see what the deferences are, e.g., the the License Fee and the Special Plate Fee may be the major differences.

In Virginia, we have a onetime fee for antique plates, maybe $100.

In California the registration fee is based on the price you paid for the vehicle, (or what you stated the purchase price was), the rest are added to that. I don't know what % the fee is.

Registration for my '31 CCPU runs $170 for 2 years for Regular or Collector Car plates.
Historic Vehicle plates are $5.00 and last a lifetime. I just changed mine from Collector Car to Historic Vehicle. No more renewals for me.

These costs vary by state! I would venture California has some critical requirements Here in Missouri the requirements for using a vintage plate on an over 25 year old vehicle is to find a plate of the year of the vehicle and apply for use. The general Missouri state rules follow:
Year of Manufacture License Plates
The owner of any historic vehicle who possesses a license plate issued by the state of Missouri that is over 25 years old, in which the year of issuance of such plate is consistent with the model year of the vehicle, may register such plate as a Year of Manufacture historic vehicle license plate

In order to verify that the configuration (license plate number) on your vintage Missouri license plate(s) is available for a Year of Manufacture registration, please submit your inquiry to our central office staff using our Motor Vehicle Inquiries web form. Our staff will review and respond, accordingly.

To apply for Year of Manufacture license plates, you must submit the following items (by mail or in person) to our central office in Jefferson City:

A completed Application for Missouri Historic or Personalized Historic License Plates (Form 570);
A picture of the license plate you wish to use for the Year of Manufacture registration;
A paid personal property tax receipt (original or copy) or a statement of non-assessment from your county of residence (or city of St. Louis) for the previous year;
A current insurance identification card (original or copy) or other proof of financial responsibility;
A copy of the vehicle's title or registration receipt;
A registration fee of $25.25 (this is a one-time fee);
A $6 processing fee.

I guess I am lucky here in Iowa $51.00 for my 29 tudor, same as my 2000 dodge pickup!

Pennsylvania is $ 92.50 for antique plates, if you want year of manufacture plates,they are another $92.50 with you supply the plate .Penndot have to approve the plates to make sure they are in good condition and the number is available.They had front and rear plates in that era so could be possible that the matching plate is on another car,but not likely.

Also that is a one time only fee and car does not have to be inspected.

In Va it is sales tax based on stated purchase price plus a 1 time fee of $50 for permanent antique plates. If you have a set of plates to match your car and you're lucky enough for that number to not be already registered then it is another $50 to register the plates to your car.

in Canada every province is different as well.
here in Alberta it is a one time fee. perpetual antique vehicle license plate. i don't remember what it costs but i think it was under $100. with that plate from there you can put a same year as the car license plate on the car at no extra fees. the antique plate has to be inside the vehicle for the era plate to be on the car. (for the police if you get stopped)

Ohio: My historical plate was $17, plus a $2 fee for the deputy registrar. In 1994 it was good for the life of me owning the vehicle. I do believe they changed that to every 20 years. If you have a correct year plate, I guess those are the normal registration fee (no discount)
