Default V8 engine found half buried

I found a V8 with stick shift transmission today the Number on the bell is BBP8-3625829 all of that is between the stars. I have search online but can't find any VIN list that give a number like this. Anyone know about it?

How about a photo?

Ford stamped the serial number first on the transmission. The stamped trans was then mated to an engine. When the engine was installed on a frame/chassis, the number stamped on the transmission was then stamped to three points on the Ford frame.

I don't know about the "BBP8" portion of the number.
A familiar style of Ford "VIN" would be "Star 18-3625829 Star" stamped on the trans and frame rails.

This is what my 1937 Ford trans number looks like. This number also appears on the frame.

Yes TonyM the number is on the bell just above the inspection plate like in your photo and is BBP8-3625829 which is strange. I just thought that maybe someone would have seen one similar. The place where I found it had a lot of old logging trucks and pieces from the 30s including a 34 but it still had the transmission and bell in it so it wasn't that one.

I think BB would be a big truck. According to Vanpelts site it's a 1937.

Could the BBP8 actually be BB18

Thanks Bob C, I guess I would just go by the number instead of the P8 part of the number. It was neat to walk up on a flat head half buried, There was a piece of a cab nearby that did look something like a 37. The BB really made me think it was a lot earlier, I have Model As and was admiring some of those engines laying around when I came up on the cool V8.

Yes, '37 truck...the P is either a 1 or a mistake! it's a normal number. All engines of a given type (221 here) were numbered in the same series in Fords up through '49. The number was on trans, engine and trans were considered a unit and that number became the number of the vehicle it was installed in. Ford varied over the years in how applications of engines were marked or not marked...in some years engines headed into trucks, Mercuries, etc got markings but the basic serial was the same for all engines of a type.
