Default Front Service Brake(s) Adjustment

Is the Front Brake adjustment at the "actuating arm" accomplished with the weight of the car on a flat surface or while up on car jacks? When I adjust the brake drag while the car up on car jacts the wheel spins with no noise. When I put the car down on pavement the front wheels make a loud scraping noise when I attempt to move the car, more so when I apply the brakes. I put on new cast iron drums and hubs and all new parts and have adjusted the brakes several times. What is going on? How do I fix it?

It sounds like you have too much slop in the front wheel bearings and tightening them may help. Else or in addition, I think you have to look at worn spindles (where the inboard bearing rides) or drums that were installed out of alignment with the axis of the hubs.

First things first.. The stands are under the axles and not the frame ?

Thank you. The inner wheel bearing was very loose within itself, in fact made the whole drum plain sloppy. I purchased it from a national parts house last spring but could not find any mfg markings or part numbers on it at all. I used the old, mabye original bearing I saved from the previous rebuild and it now works as it should. I appreciate your time, info and advice.

Thank you for the safety reminder. I was born and raised in a family owned machine shop near Charlotte and my Dad always had what he called "A 5 Minute Safety Meeting" before pay checks were handed out on Fridays. I sincerely appreciate your concern.

Bill, it wasn't really a safety reminder.. I was really asking if the brakes were being adjusted with the weight on the axles or the frame.. It doesn't matter with the wedges, but, it does with the rods.. The weight needs to be on the axles when/if adjusting the rod length..
