Intake valve guide seals
I am going back together with my 59A, Is there a trick to installing the intake valve assembly without thrashing the seal? I have chamfered the hole, greased it and warmed it up but when it pops into place it takes a chunk out of the seal.

Re: Intake valve guide seals
I do like Ol Ron does - a little high RTV on the guide.

Re: Intake valve guide seals
I haven't used the seals for the past 50 years, just a light coating of RTV on the guide and your done. I also Knurl the guide for a tight fit with the valve stem.

Re: Intake valve guide seals
The square oring seals supplied with some gasket kits aren´t a favourite either...i like the normal round oring type seals.

Re: Intake valve guide seals
One thing you have to consider is:: from 32 to 49, there wasn;t any seal. Another thing is the fit of the guide to block is a very tight clearance in the first place and this gets full of carbon over time, making a good sea and also making it hard to remove the the guide. I also put a small of never seize on the ex guides. The next guy that has to take this engine apart will thank me. Over time we find a better way to do things, modern engines use allot of this stuff to seal their engines.

After checking it out I realized that it was for the most part just the leading edge of the seal that got sheared off. The rest of the seal remained intact and did what it was supposed to do.

Re: Intake valve guide seals
Is it worth anything to also install the seals on the exhaust guides also. Seeing when you buy a gasket kit 16 are included?

Re: Intake valve guide seals
That's why 16 are included.. There is no down side to installing them.

Except when you try to remove them.

Re: Intake valve guide seals
I thought originally, only the inlet valve guides had a groove for an o ring; the ex guides were plain [no groove] to assist in heat transfer. At least that's how I run mine

Re: Intake valve guide seals
Originally that is the way they were. Lot of replacements now have the groove in both. I prefer the original.

Re: Intake valve guide seals
I struck this square cut seals problem also, they are nearly impossible to insert without pinching the sides, in my opinion these reproductions are made so cheap with a wad cutter that an engineering mistake has been created and should not be sold. There is a proper Viton "O" ring available that compress 1mm.

Re: Intake valve guide seals
As far as I know these seals are to prevent vacuum leaks between the intake runners and the crankcase. On the exhaust side, I guess Ford didn't care if a little exhaust leaked into the crankcase.
That said, they don't have to be the greatest seal in the world, just enough to hold 20 inches of mercury at most. |

Re: Intake valve guide seals
After some miles, they get carboned up and nothing gets by them.
