Instrument panel light wiring
Good day folks,
I am working on a '30 Roadster Pickup, and have a problem with the instrument panel light - the one on this Pickup has no wire leading into it - if I were to rewire the light, where does the wire go? Mike Johannesburg, South Africa |

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
to the amp gauge. there is a little slot in the upper left side of the instrument panel, there is where the wire goes through.

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
Thanks JW Hash, but I should have been more specific in my question - what I meant was, where does the wire get attached on the light itself? I have included two pictures to illustrate my predicament - you can see that there is no wire coming from the light

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
You are missing the insulated pig tail. The bulbs button will make contact with a small brass button crimped or soldered to the wire. The wire must be insulated from the bulb/switch holder. This could be easily fixed or you could order a repop light for pretty cheap.

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
So, if I were to solder a wire into the light, it would go down the centre hole?

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
I don't have a photo handy but you can check the suppliers on-line catalogues for pictures of the instrument lights. Try Snyders or Brattons for two

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
It should be the same design as your tail light and head light sockets. It springs against the bulb with pads that keep the end and wires insulated from the socket.

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
unless you know what are doing, repairing the dash light is pretty tough to do.
and NO they are not like a regular pig tail . the end of the wire is fixed to the insulator. if you do not do it right the light will stay on or it will short out. for a driver the good repro, is the way to go. |

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
Thanks everyone, you have convinced me to go for a replacement light rather than waste valuable time messing with something I am unfamiliar with

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
When you get your light all hooked up may I suggest you use a LED bulb instead of the Incandescent bulb. That baby gets HOT. I think I left PERMANENT finger prints on mine once when i reached to turn it off...
Heres the bulb I used, it's 12v tho; https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...t-car/169/766/ Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 01-21-2016 at 12:59 AM. |

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
I have an original dash light and was concerned that the shield may become a conductor so I wrapped it with electrical tape.
I also attached the end to the switched side of the ignition switch so it would be disconnected when the key was off. |

Re: Instrument panel light wiring
Some guys connect the dash light to the tail light wire (at the switch) so it only comes on when the headlights or cowl lights are turned on.
