29 Model A Coolant
So after my deal with the leaky carb, it runs and doesn't leak but needs coolant, which is the best coolant to put in it. Thanks

Re: 29 Model A Coolant
A lot of Model A engines have been compromised by running straight water. It rusts the insides of the engine and will freeze and crack blocks. The antifreeze will restrict rusting. The green stuff will wear out in a few years and needs to be replaced then. Take the old antifreeze to a radiator shop to be disposed of properly. If you are running an aluminum head use a zinc.

Re: 29 Model A Coolant
FWIW,
I read somewhere that the newer antifreeze formulas were acidic?? and could cause problems in the A's system. The thread said all Prestone brand antifreeze were this way. I found some green antifreeze that said on the label for all older cars before 1995.

Re: 29 Model A Coolant
Rob, does that mean Sierra? I used to use Sierra. It does not foam. You can't use a standard antifreeze tester in it though, and that scares me. I want to know how far down I am protected.

Zerex Original Green. $9.00 a gallon at NAPA for the concentrate. You add your own water.

Make certain to use distilled water.

Re: 29 Model A Coolant
Why do you say distilled water. As a young lad I worked at service stations and car dealerships and we filled the water can from the hose.

Re: 29 Model A Coolant
Wayne, hose water will work, but if you want to keep impurities out, use distilled water.
Brass copper etc all eventually "rot" from impurities in the water. |

Re: 29 Model A Coolant
It’s my understanding, that distilled water is hungry water, so it draws minerals out of the block. I believe I read this on one of the water wetter sites. They did not recommend distilled water. I don’t know, maybe this is like oil.

Re: 29 Model A Coolant
I'm like Hep1966, premix 50/50 from AutoZone or Advance, with distilled water to top off if need be. But I remember my Dad just using the garden hose on his A's including the one I have, so go figure...
