Default Interesting trip to Alaska

Go to www.ginsphotos.com and follow 4 brave individuals make the trip from College Station ,Texas to Prudo Bay, Alaska in their Model As . First problem they had was a fan came apart on one of the cars . Many cases of vapor lock. Very well documented with pictures and text . As of July 11 these folks were on their way back and were in BC . 71 day trip.

Never knew that they came through Fairbanks, fortunately there are lots of fine folks here and a vast amount of Model A knowledge and usually parts available to help out fellow travelers.

The brave folks on the Alaskan trip are on their way back but have broke down ( worn rod inserts ) in West Yellowstone, Montana. Last post ,July 23 , stated they were waiting on parts. Hope they make the repair and are able to complete their trip home .

I wish I had the time to make this trip. Very nice in a modern car, so cool in a model A

I made that trip in 1996 in a modern car, quite a trip in an A. Good for them. Now, on to Terra del Fuego to Furthest South? Been there, but a cruise ship tour just does not have the panache.

I was surprised that those inserts failed so quickly...the engines were rebuilt shortly before they left, so they should of had less than 10,000 miles on them, and it appeared they were careful to frequently change oil. Any thoughts on that? They have sure had their share of problems....one of the cars broke an axle, and they appeared to have gotten several tanks of dirty gas. I was also surprised that they started that long trip with what appears to have been an original fan blade. It caused a lot of damage when it let loose. I keep thinking that the word has been out there for quite a while on those, but some folks keep thinking that somehow their's will be just fine......but the blog and photos are outstanding....one of the wives is responsible for that and it is very well done and interesting reading.

What an adventure !
It takes a lot of fortitude to take something like that on.
A great job was done in putting all of this together.
Also included, is some really nice photographic work !

From what i heard, the bearings had a short life due to a timing issue.

I know the car, and it was at a shop I frequently visit. It had a Nurex auto advance in the valve chamber that failed a couple days into the trip. They drove a few days with messed up timing before figuring out what the problem was. I think severe pre-detonation was the cause of the bearing failure. It probably cracked then, and waited this long until breaking apart.

That was fantastic. That was a well written and beautifully photographed travel log.
