Transmission Full of Grease - Now What!
A couple of days ago I asked about how much grease to put in the universal joint because after putting in 2+ tubes & not getting anything out of the speedometer housing I quit. It was suggested that the excess greease could possibly go into the transmission. I had just drained and filled the trans with fresh 600w before greasing the universal.
Pulled the trans plug today & sure enough it is full of grease. Of course now it is a blend of grease and oil as I had already driven it. What is the best way to get this mush out of the case. What do you think about putting in some kerosene, driving up / down the drive a few times, drain, repeat until flushed out. Good idea, bad or suggestions. Thanks, |

Personally, if it is not making any odd noises, I'd leave it.. The grease should work well in the transmission, especially with the 600w to make a nice gooey emulsion.. Bet it is really quiet now?

Re: Transmission Full of Grease - Now What!
without opening a can of worms by removing shift tower and flushing it all out, i would drain what liquid does come out and refill with 600w. i would do it periodically and often and keep an eye on things. maybe someone was covering up something???

To get the grease out the top will have to come off and the grease pulled and washed out. Kerosene or gasoline will clean out enough and not have to be driven. Clean and drain well, refill, and go.

Simple and effective I would say!

Appreciate the replies. Am going to use James Rogers suggestion about using the lighter oil then refill, sounds like a good solution, thanks to all.

I warmed up my transmission with a heat gun before draining it. I believe that helps the grease run out better.

Re: Transmission Full of Grease - Now What!
I think I would be a little concerned as to why so much grease got into the transmission from greasing the U joint. I was one of the people that suggested that the grease might be going into the transmission if the rear bearing was the open type. I have never seen a lot of grease get into the transmission while greasing the U joint. Sealed bearings sound like a good idea in order to prevent this from happening.

Re: Transmission Full of Grease - Now What!
Rusty it was 2 tubes of grease that made a lot of the grease enter the tranny.
When I greased my U-joint I removed a speedometer bolt and pumped until grease just started to come out the bolt hole. I then removed the shift tower to see if any grease was going into the tranny. I have the original open bearings and shields, and the grease was just starting to show at the grease baffle. So, this method of greasing worked perfectly. |

Re: Transmission Full of Grease - Now What!
The next time you grease the ujoint, fill the trans first and leave the fill plug out. Take a bolt out of the speedo gear housing. Grease the ujoint until grease comes out of the bolt hole on speedo housing. If trans fluid starts to come out of fill hole in trans then you know grease is going into tranny. Hope this helps next time!!
