Default 1939 Mercury Convertible at auction today!

Saw this on the Mecum auction website a month ago and it will be on the block today. Slightly modified from original production but nothing too radical and it still has a flathead in it. Will be watching today on my tablet at work to see how much it brings. https://www.mecum.com/lots/AZ0321-45...y-convertible/

Nice car but, the "resale white" is not a winning color, IMO.

Would be interesting to get the full story re: "stored" for 40 years".

Also, wonder why "the restorer" of the dash didn't make all the wood grain pattern flow in one horizontal direction? Would have looked better.

No doubt, a lot of work and $$ was spent on that build. Wish they had posted photos of the under carriage.

Totally agree!!! There are so many other choices that would have showed the curves and lines of the car so much more!!!

It’s very interesting how the photos that were posted a month ago that were indoors show much better as far as the paint color, looks much darker. The video under tent cover shows that to a degree but if your driving in sunshine a different color choice might have been the way to go.

Man, I almost LIKE that thing....EXCEPT for the hideous wood graining, as someone pointed-out. The upper hose set-up on the passenger side actually is kind of neat looking, and a simple method of getting around that offset generator.

One more interesting point on this car.....the two "anti-chatter" rods go FORWARD to the front crossmember, as was done on SOME '41-'48 Canadian Fords. Maybe "rockfla" or someone knowledgeable in Mercs could comment as to whether ALL '39 Mercs had these rods going FORWARD, or was it only on the convertibles? EXAMPLE pictures below of these "forward-facing" rods. DD

Very interesting V8Coopman
Never seen those before, my Mercury does not have those, could it also be an early/late as they made a running design change??? Maybe mine got removed?? Wouldn't mind installing some though!!!! ANOTHER interesting thing that caught my eye but wasn't sure to post is the absence of a voltage regulator on the convertible. NOTE upper right in the two photos, Maybe built into the generator???

V8:
The red v8 shown above is one I removed from came a 1941 Ford coupe a few years ago. The car had been stored in a Ft. Lauderdale, FL warehouse garage for about 30 years and the owner passed away. It was a "someday" car. No, I'm not in the photo.

NOT a huge 41 fan but that's a pretty righteous looking coupe. I'd loved to have that as an everyday type driver, had a great patina!!!!

Like some, I didn't care for the wood graining on the dash or the Buick chrome spears on the skirts. However, would love to see it in my possession, beautiful car.

Can someone please tell me if the Mercury Convertible 1939 had the factory option of wood grain?

Matej1991 asks if the Wood-grain Dash on this 1939 Mercury Convertible was a Factory Option?

Every '39 Merc dash I have seen, including mine, was wood grained, however never seen the delta panel coming to the steering wheel wood grained.

39 Mercury Dash's were never wood grained, they were painted light gold-ish, light tan-ish fine metal flake finish. The window garnish is wood-grained BUT not the dash. At least the USA version.

No Sir, it did not. IF the one pictured in this post is of your dash, it wouldn't even be the correct woodgrain pattern IF they did. I do not believe the convertibles had ANY wood graining at all, I believe all of the door top trim was painted as well as the sedan coupe. I believe only the two and four doors had wood grained window garnishes.

1939 Mercury Interior as illustrated in the original Sales Catalog. Note the comment on the right which reads "Window and door moldings are grain finished to harmonize well with a choice of striped broadcloth or rich Bedford Cord upholstery." This comment is in line with what Rockfla mentioned in Post#10. While this comment describes the "New Mercury 8 Sedan-Coupe, the illustration appears more like the Two Door Sedan?

Thank you all for your help. If the Mercury had wood graining like the 1939 Ford, I think they would look perfect.

I don't think the wood grain for 39 Ford is the same as 39 Mercury. Although faded, here is the Mercury pattern

I wrote about wood grain on the dash. That if Mercury had wood grain on the dash like a Ford that they would look perfect.

i believe some cars that came out of Canada had wood grain dash as an option but yeh consistency in the grain would have helped big time, those ash trays stand out for all the wrong reasons But all in all one very nice unit

I prefaced all of my comments here with the addendum "Here in the USA"...as I know some of the Mercury's that are down under had leather interiors.....DO you possibly have Ford documented proof of both the leather interior & wood grained dashes for 1939???

rockfla sorry don't have any ford docs as to the mercury but when you go to a show or a swap meet all the older hands pick mine as an American build strait away as cloth interior painted dash and iron heads . They all say the same the Canadian built cars where just a step above the American ones as they hade woodgrain[painted] dash, leather trim and alloy heads . Go figure
