Default water pump questions from newbie

Recently bought a '30 fordor and have been having fun learning about timing and rebuilding the carb. Running well now but has loud noise from front of motor. (timing gears?) Noticed on the water pump that the grease cup is on the front and grease zerk on the rear. Is that a problem and if so should they be reversed? Also water type of grease is used in the cup and zerk?

Thanks

Pictures please! The original fittings did not have a ball check in the so the one with the most "pressure" to push the grease out is the one closest to the engine and it had a cap, is this the one you are calling A cup?

Your water pump should look like this:

Welcome to the forum. If you have a modern zerk with the check ball that should be good to keep the grease in. If not then see Dollar Bill's picture and rebuild the pump that way. They are not hard at all. As was stated before, where are you and please post pictures-we love pictures.

It does have a modern A style zerk but with a bronze screw on cover. The zerks are reversed; does it matter?

Yes, the cap is to seal the grease fitting to prevent coolant loss through it, and to keep air from entering the coolant through it.
