If you want to know what new parts are currently available, just go to Summit Racing and search Ford 8" ring and pinion gears. My wife's cousin's husband has 3.50 gears in his 64 1/2 Mustang Convertible/w C4 transmission. There are times when he wishes he had retained the OEM gears for the highway, probably 3.00.

I know for sure factory 2.79---3.00----3.25----3.40---3.55. and probably 4.11. I'm sure there is something else in between 3.55 and 4.11.

Keep in mind that the mustangattitude list may include ratios for the 7 1/4" rear axle used on 6-cylinder car, the 9" used on K-code HP 289, as well as those for the 8". I think the 3.00 is the most common for the 8".

I have 2:75's in my stock Falcon Sprint . Like them a lot on the highway, & decent takeoff acceleration .

I have a Maverick 8" with 3.80 ratio aftermarket gears in my '32 Desoto. It's perfect with my overdrive transmission -- 2100 rpm at 70 mph.

An 8" in good condition can handle up to 300 hp with no problem. There are no carrier breaks, so you can use any available ring and pinion gear ratios without changing carriers.

It seems in my Wagon the gearing may be too low in OD.

How can I ascertain the gearing in mine w/o removing the driveshaft and pumpkin?

jwawhite, if it’s the original, it should be a Dana, probably a 44. The V8 o/d cars were either 3.7x, 3.9x, or 4:11’s IIRC. The 6 cylinder o/d were 4.27 or so. So you have to watch close turning and counting. Not a lot of spread. I’ve always thought the 3.9x or 4:11’s were good in o/d on the freeway. I had a 4:27 out of a wagon in a 312 bird. It was great when I was 18.
