Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
Found this on a recent trip, The owner thought it was a 28 closed cab pickup with the top cut off, but it looks like a roadster pickup to me. The drivers door and tailgate are there but the bumpers and horn are missing along with the left lower hood panel. I can find only surface rust with nothing rusted through. The engine turns over and it was parked there 15 years ago under its own power. It is titled. Other than the headlights from a 30-31 and a chev steering wheel, does the rest look right? It would be about a $600 trip for me to trailer it home. The price seemed fair to me, but any ideas on a fair price would be much appreciated.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
I agree that it is a roadster pickup. Carefully calculate what you think it would cost to make it into the vehicle you want. Post this and let the guys take a shot at your numbers. Compare the result with what you could buy one for complete. Do you mean the owner wanted $600 or it or that it would cost $600 for you to get it home?

Look close!.....I think I can see the bolt holes for the rear doors. I think it's a Phaeton.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
From what I can see it looks to be a cut down Phaeton to me. Too bad there wasn't a better shot of the rear of the door area, rather than the pickup bed being so prominent in the photo.

Looks like a Model T bed and rear fenders.

Wasn't originally a Roadster Pickup... Model T Pickup Bed.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
There is also something wrong with the basic bed. I took a picture of my '31 roadster pickup that should have the same bed. Note that the stake pocket is on the end of my bed in the corner. I think Ford had an express bed it it may be one of those but I am not familiar enough with them to say for sure. Another general factor that should be noted the truck looks like it had a rough life on the farm. You are probably going to find a lot of welds that will need to be ground off when parts are removed. Unless you have a lot more time and money than I do I think I would pass. Take my suggestion and post what you think it is going to cost to build this to the level you want and let the guys comment.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
If you can buy it and get it home for $1100, you'll be OK.
OK, now lets chisel down the price. The spark lever is facing UP instead of DOWN. It has a 30-1 generator. It has a 1928 starter switch. It has the tall water outlet, instead of the 28-9 shorter one. OK, now how much will he pay you to haul it away? I wonder if the double pulley on the generator was to run a vacuum pump to milk the cows? |

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
The picture in # 5 looks to be the roadster pickup.Remember,on the phaeton there is a skinny panel between the front and rear doors. Also in pic # 5,it looks to have the line of rivets across the back and down the rear corner holding the back to the quarters. It does have a T bed.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
The bed is an odd one, and it clearly has "T" fenders. I don't see anything that precludes it from being a RDSTR PU.
I get so jealous when I see all the finds in Minnesota. Amazing they are still in fields, and usually so solid. Amazing. |

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
I'm not a restoration expert by any means, but from what I see this would be a good project for a "ratrod" style hotrod... I don't know how the barn feels about those. But this truck looks like more work that it's worth just given the way the body has been chopped to pieces.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
Agreed, the panel behind the door is too wide, the Phaeton panel is narrower and it also looks like it has two snaps on the drivers side for the side curtains, the Phaeton has only one snap there.

Look at picture 4 in post #1 and pic 2 in post #9. The door sill is notched around seat frame, definitely an ocpu

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
I think it started life as a 1929 Open Pickup. The passenger door looks like it might have a hole for a door handle, and the dip stick and radiator shell are 1929.
The panel between the doors on a 1928-9 Phaeton is only about 5". BTW, does it come with a title card? |

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
We have a similar assemblage of "parts" here in Cow Hampshire. Hailing from Epsom, NH this one appears to have started life as a CC pickup - but was er, modified into a RPU.
Well, like trans-sexualism, this one hasn't necessarily been followed to completion. Maybe now a CCRPU? http://nh.craigslist.org/cto/5652251105.html Has two matching tops - either hardtop or soft top. The electrical tape on the steering wheel spokes is a creative touch. A little pricey for me though. Still, like FrankenSteen, it's nice when life can continue. Joe K

For sheet metal you've got a body with dash rail and windshield assembly; front fenders; front splash apron; one door; at least one, maybe two (can't tell for sure) running boards; side splash aprons; and hood shelves. You'll have to find everything else. That hood is wrong. The chassis and running gear are unknowns, but just standard Model A stuff, except the starter might indicate it also has a multiple disc clutch, which you will hope doesn't need rebuilding. This is a big project, but not impossible. Anything can be done with enough time, interest, and money. I agree with George on rat rods. They are home-made shit.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
That is a 28 29 phaeton that was converted into a pickup. The box and rear fenders are Model T. You would have to find a back section for a Roadster pick up but the doors and cowl will work. The rear fenders a re 26 27 T Roadster pickup coupe. Maybe worth some money.

I agree with Tom, the side panel looks to wide for a phaeton.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
Along with the notched sill plate that was only utilized with the roadster pick up, not phaeton or roadster, the rear corner and back panel are correct for roadster pick up.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
Somebody's gonna want that T bed.I had an OK one a few years ago, when I advertised I had it and wanted to trade it for an A bed I got dozens of calls. What I wound up doing was looking at a dozen or so,then trading it for the best one of the bunch. The guy actually bought that bed to trade me,as I wasn't looking to just peddle it for cash.

Well, if nothing else, this thread shows who knows what about Model A's.

Definitely an assortment of parts put together. The hood appears to be off of a fordor or cabriolet with the reveal in the top panels.

I wouldn't restore it if I had it, but I'd make the mechanicals good, fix the door and seat and drive it for an daily driver pickup.

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
If it has a title ( and the engine number matches ), sounds like it might be worth it.
I agree that it would be neat to make it go, make it safe, and enjoy it. |

A good cowl section alone can bring that, and there you have the complete body shell, chassis and all the extra's. Sounds like an excellent price to me. An example from eBay in listing below - sold in less than 2 days even with the butchered cowl post tops. http://www.ebay.com/itm/252402547112 |

Re: Not in the barn find Roadster pickup
I'm leaning that way ronn, but it's a 2000 mile round trip or about 4 days and $600 for travel not counting food you need anyways. I just got back from there so I need a little time before I make the trip again. I think I can make that car into something that will be a driver without to much money as I have some of the parts. It may not be a show car but it will be drivable and safe and that's what I'm looking for.
