Over on the HAMB their saying 14 here it's 15. in a tight spot 1 gallon can make a difference so what is it?

The '40 car tanks are 14 gallons, sedan delivery is 17, according to the V8 Affair by Ray Miller.

The 1940 Ford Owners manual on page 62 shows 15 gal. So does 1935-48 Motors Manual.

I remember years ago, I thought it held 14 gal for some reason.

19Fordy is correct. The owners manual and the spec. section of the Service Bulletins both say 15 gal. The Service Bulletins also list 14 gal. for everything from '32 through '38. Then 15 gal. starting in '39.

I stated the same thing over on the Hamb and included a pic. the page in the owners manual...

Or maybe Ford played a little optimistic with the tank capacity?

The sedan delivery had a little dinky tank. It was only about 10 gallons. Hate to argue with Ray Miller, but friend pulled an original tank out of his sedan delivery and it was very small. He could only put about 10 gallons of water in it to test the size.

I checked my Early Ford V8 Service Manual by Floyd Clymer and it also states 15 gallons, so Ray Miller is probably wrong.

If I still had a '40 tank laying around I would use water to find out for sure.
