Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
In the book on page 19-8 I can see that the strap had some sort of a rotating cover over the lock. Was this just a disk that hung there? was there a spring on it? Does anyone have one that they can photogragh the cover and especially the pin set up attaching it to the strap? It looks like it was threaded in?
Also, what paint are you using for parts like this that tend to get beatup? |

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
Jim,
That lock cover swivels counter clockwise to cover the face of and part of side and top the lock cylinder housing. As you can see in the book side view photo, it is not simply a disc, but rather a stamping. It is attaced with a chrome-plated brass rivet that goes through the small hole above the lock cylinder (as in your photo). There's no spring, just the cover and the rivet I seem to recall that I have a spare lock cover, but I cannot confirm that until after Hershey. We use single stage urethane for most chassis parts and powder coating on a selected basis. The latter might be a good choice in this instance, but make sure the front and back of the lock cylinder housing are adequately masked to protect it. Last edited by DavidG; 09-28-2011 at 10:13 AM. Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
So is the remaining shaft left from the cover screwed in? or pressed in? It is flush on the opposite side, so I can not tell if it is threaded. Just trying to figure out how to take it off. without damaging anything.

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
If you mean the remains of the fastener that held the cover in place, it's a rivet peened over on the tubular side of the rivet, i.e. on the back side. It is not threaded.

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
This doesn't look like a rivet... I suppose it could be deteriorated. It sure isn't loose. If it gets replaced by a rivet I won't worry about messing up threads trying to get it out.

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
Jim,
There were several NOS spare tire locks (strap type) at Hershey and on all of the them the lock cover was riveted to the strap, as indicated previously. David |

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
Are there any single stage urethanes other than Imron? That's supposed to be nasty stuff.

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
We use PPG paints, including their single stage urethane. All modern paints have to be treated with respect from a safety point of view.

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
Someone may have threaded that in the past as a repair method for a worn out rivet.
All of the poly urethane paints including Imron contain isocyanate so they all require a good resperator while spraying. PPG used to have Deltron (may still have but I haven't used it for a long time) which in an acrylic urethane but you still have to protect your lungs. All of them have toluene in there and that stuff can really hurt you over time. Kerby |

Thanks for the warnings! I might have to look professional rather than back yard.

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
Can some one post a closeup, front and back, of what the rivet looks like installed?
Thanks. Last edited by jim1932; 11-21-2011 at 05:29 PM. Reason: typo |

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
Isocyonates go in thru your pores, not breathed in. Need to wear good respirator mask with correct filters for solvents, wear a suit, and good ventilation. New paints are way more dangerous to people than old ones, but "They are good for the environment"
Anything with a hardener has isocyanates in it. |

Re: Questions on 32 Spare Tire Lock strap
Still looking for a good photo and/or specs on the fastener that holds the lock cover on.
