Default Ford gear part numbers

In my limited experience original Ford steel parts may or may not have Ford in script stamped on them, and the part #. On transmission gears, I have not always found the Ford script or part #, and can guess they may be replacements. On a ring & pinion gear, it is stamped Ford with a #8063 which does not jive with the Green Bible which calls it out at as 48-4209 '38-48 pass & comm. I would appreciate any help on that numbering system ?
Thank you Fordbarners.

The #8063 is not a part number and would not appear in the Green bible. That is number assigned to a ring and pinion gear set when they are matched. That number will appear on the rear of the pinion bearing journal, and will also be faintly etched on the back surface of ring gear.

Is the pinion 6-spline or 10-spline? The original part set with that prefix was a 10-spline set back in 1935 up into 1938 or so. The replacements are 6-spline but the drive shaft can be a problem for those that still have the 10-spline shaft. We get a lot of questions about what to do about that.

18 prefix was 1932 with a V8 and made it well up into the 30s for the 221 V8 engine ID. The prefix 40 came out with the model 40 and lasted those two years for 1933/34. Prefix 48 was a 1935 prefix, 68 was the 1936 prefix, and 78 was for 1937. It is to note that the 68 prefix was the first to designate the year of design and that stayed in effect till well after the war. The prefixes had to change for more complexity so in 1938 they changed the prefix to 81A with the 221 engine and 82A for 60HP V8. In 1939 this became even more apparent apparent for that change when the 239 engine was added to the line up so there were 91A for 221 engine and 99A for the 239 engine. Further prefix changes included a last digit change of C for Commercial and T for Truck designators in the prefix code and others for larger trucks. Examples would be 99T for a truck part with a 239 engine or 01C for a 1940 221 engine commercial pickup part. Later additional engines like the 9N 4-cylinder and the G model 6-cyclinder required further changes to prefixes. Numbering for Ford started in the wheels with the 1000 series, 2000 series for brakes, 3000 for steering & suspension, 4000 for rear axles, and as components change the numbering changes like 6000 series for engine & 7000 for transmission and so on. Ford stuck with this system of numbering even though prefixes changed over the years. I think it was referred to the UPC system or Universal Parts Code.

The next major change was in the 8BA era in 1948 when the prefix system was just starting to get more complex to designate a bit more information.

This is a 6 spline set. How did Ford come up with that #, like 8063 ? Were the numbers assigned to match sets in sequence so the set before might be #8062 ? Thank you Fordbarners, especially JM 35 for the location of the matching #s.

It's more like a serial number or code but only the guys that put them on there know for sure. The sets had to me matched up for best fit and that's how they designated a set. If you try to put one pinion with a mismatched ring, it's likely that they would be problematic to get them working well together.

There may be some early aftermarket stuff out there and I know there is plenty of later aftermarket reproductions and they don't pay to use the Ford script. They generally etch their own part number on there with some sort of set match parks or numbers.
