A good day for a 5w coupe
Today this car moved under its own power for the first time since the mid 60s. My best friend bought it in the 60s and I painted it 35 years ago with Tahitian Red lacquer. Unfortunately, he passed away before finishing it. He had many other projects ahead of it. Before he passed, I asked him how he was going to finish it and he said he was going to run it fenderless for a while then put fenders and running boards on. I acquired it from him and promised him I would finish it the way he wanted.
Well, today I had the thrill of driving it out of my shop. I am sure he was watching from above with approval. I got it from him as a body on a frame. Installed a dropped front axle, Lincoln brakes, 39 trans with LZ gears, rebuilt a late 32 rear end with 3.54s, rebuilt 32 steering column with 37 banjo, made headlight stands and run 32 commercial headlights. I still need to finish the exhaust but today was a day I will mark on my calendar. If you go to my public albums there are other pictures of the build. |

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
Eventually it will have fenders and running boards as per his wishes. I personally like fenders and running boards and bumpers, and will add them after running it a season or two as a hiboy. (up here it rains!) Thanks for your kind words.

Looks good. Let me know how the Zephyr gears and 3.54's work for you. There are differing opinions, but would like to hear some first hand experiences.

Nice ride. What is that dual-carb air cleaner you have on it?

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
That air cleaner I made from a Harley Sportster cover. The carbs are close enough together that it covered both of them. I made the base and it uses a K&N element. It kind of looks old school.

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
Top water hoses are Back Order Bob's (Drake) kit for a 59 series engine in a 32. Surprisingly, he had them in stock and they fit well! I may put a polished ss tube in the long straight part at some point.

Beautiful car, and as the pic below shows to better advantage, your air cleaner adaptation is really NICELY-done.
Your shop........"stupid clean", but also VERY nice. DD |

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
Nice job. The B.O.B hoses look good....this must have been before you ran it as there are no hose clamps.

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
Yes Graeme, right before I fired it up, I hadn't installed the thermostats yet. The clamps are on the lower hoses. The pictures in my album are in a crazy order, don't know how to put them in the right order. The picture of the dash with the correct gas gauge and oil chex is the final verson, I should probably delete the older one with oil pressure where gas gauge goes.

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
Looks like stock 59a exhaust manifolds, I wanted to use them on my 59a in a stock `32 chassis and steering box. But the left side wouldn't clear the steering box. How did you make them work? Can you post a photo?

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
The exhaust manifolds are stock 37-41 manifolds. I may put some Sanderson headers on later. I will take a picture and post it in the public album of the left side, it does clear the stock steering box. Probably get that done in about and hour. (watching the Seahawk game)

You are right, I'm sorry. You guys are missing a ton of players besides the QB.
Pictures should be up there now. Go to my public albums. Probably 3/8 -1/2" clearance. |

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
Love the headlights. Are the '32 commercial lights originals or are they reproductions? If repro, who makes them?

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
The 32 commercial headlights were a pair of NOS ones. Since they were the two bulb type reflectors I put the turn signals in there. The car had 52 Pontiac tail lights that were installed in the 60s. (the chrome parts are a bit larger then the repop 50 Pontiac tail lights). One of the headlights was shelf worn and I had to repaint it but the other was perfect.

Re: A good day for a 5w coupe
Right Bob, I only said I made it, not invented it. I saw another like it a couple of years ago but never got to talk to the guy who had it on his car at a Good Guys car show in Puyallup WA. Thanks again for your great pictures.
