Default flathead identification

Question guys I hear 59ab and 8ba for flatheads. What is the engine designation for 35 and 36 flatheads. Is it the car model or some other number.
Thanks Bob

Hi Everyone, robertwg, in 1935 and 1936 the engines are called '21 Stud' and were standard with 221 cu. in. In 1936 some were poured babbit bearings and some were insert bearings, those are called LB's. The only reliable way to know which is to pop off a main bearing cap.

A suggestion, take a look for the Search Forum button in the red bar when you're looking at the list of topics. Put in Engine Identification and have fun!

Part number designators change a lot from one year to the next after the model A years. FoMoCo started with A for the model A cars then went to B for the 1932 4-cyclinders. After that they did a model code for a year or two then they went to a more universal code that included a year digit, an engine type digit, and an engineering change digit for the prefix. With V8 heads they started with "18" for the first V8s. They then went to "40" by model for the 33 thru 36 engines. But with aluminum heads and cast iron thrown into the mix, they changed around a bit for a while.

There were 221 blocks like the 18 & 81A then 239 blocks like the 99A and so on. There is an engine ID thread that has pictures if you do a search.
