Flywheel Balancing Gauge
I am trying to balance a flywheel using a flywheel gauge that is sold by Snyder's and many other suppliers. Directions state to bolt to crankshaft and set with a gap of .030 which I have done and check for variations every 30 degrees. It states that I should not have more that .006 variation. Does that mean from the .030 ?? or do I take the high and low variation numbers and add them together. ??

Re: Flywheel Balancing Gauge
Are you dialing in the flywheel cover?
If so, then .006" is the toatal acceptable difference when checking at 9, 12, and 3 o'clock positions. Don't bother checking the bottom half because the bellhousing will pull it where it wants to be. I've never had a problem doing it this way. |

Re: Flywheel Balancing Gauge
I haven't used that tool to align the flywheel housing, I used a dial indicator on two last summer. But, I would say that if you use the recommended gap of .030 at 12 o'clock, your gap should to not vary more than .006 of that .030 gap at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.
Oh, and Happy Hour is usually from 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock. |

Yes. If one reading is say .027" and the next is say .033", then you're at the .006" limit. That said, I've found it hard to get some covers to within that .006" limit. Just my opinion but if you have a tough one then .010" is fine with me. The clutch shouldn't chatter at that number. I've seen some that started out at .030+". Now, this has nothing to do with the balance of the flywheel, I think we're just having a terminology problem. |
