Default How to change the bulb in the dash meter assembly.

I'm replacing my dash on my '28 and would like to remove the center bulb from the socket assembly. It rotates a 1/4 turn to turn on but how can I remove this bulb?
I want to clean the chrome plating by soaking it in rust remover as it has some lite rust.
I have the light assembly already removed from the dash.

The dash cover cap, will pull off the body so you then can remove the bulb.

Pull straight out, maybe a 1/4 turn might be necessary on the cap.

Then don't let it slip out of your hands, fly out the car door and land on the pavement.

Where you, if like me, without seeing promptly step on it and crush it.

Grr!

The modern repops fit, but not nearly so well.

Joe, you've had better luck than I. I've been unable make a repop work at all, and the repro covers I have aren't interchangeable with original.

In fact you bring this to mind. I went through the "just buy the cover" and found it would go in - but was non-functional.

Consulting with my mentor Joe Tambolleo at Tam's, he was aware of the problem but could offer no solution other than an outright replacement of the entire light with repop.

I settled for a light that DOES work over one that is part original and doesn't.

Disappointed, I went for a ride at night and occasionally checked my speed with the light.

By the time I came back all disappointment was past.

Riding in a Model A is like that I find...

In the case of the instrument bulb and shield assy, it is best to find an original socket, bulb and lamp cap.

To remove the cap ,turn it counter clockwise, carefully pull it out. To replace the cap , Grab the bulb, push the bulb and brass socket in and turn clockwise, then align the notch in the cap to the notch in the socket base, then push together. This will be in the on position.

Is there a 12 volt bulb for the dash light?

So far I've had no luck. This is at least 35 years old. Did they make a throwaway repo back then ???
If I pull any harder I think I'll break the shield off.
It still works but I'd like the clean it real good as I'm adding a new Nickle plated dash.

Could you post a photo of what you have?

On my 28 I rotate it counterclockwise then pull the shield straight back and off.

Here is a photo. Does it look like an original or is it a 35+year old repro?

That looks like an original. Just turn the cover CCW and pull harder. Maybe some Kroil would help.
It will polish up some, but really needs to be renickeled. I got lucky and found a nice one at a swap meet. The bases quite often show up, but rarely the covers.

Yes.

JRElliott here on the Ford Barn has a complete list of 6 & 12 volt replacement bulbs.
