Default '37 trunk hinge question

Can someone tell me what was used in these metal cups that go over the trunk hinge bolts inside the car. When I removed them originally, they seemed to be full of something like old plumber's putty. Was that to keep water from leaking into the trunk? What's the proper material to use on these? I'm thinking of using plumbers putty again....... Thanks, Bill Campbell

You could use the plumber's putty , but a better choice would be the soft black automotive strip type sealer.

I'm not familiar with that. Do you have a brand? Is it like tape or what?

Ok, I see Napa has something like that, if that's what you mean. I'll try them.
