1935 Ford steering column question.
Hi All Ford Barners, my 35 phaeton is progressing nicely, I have pretty much finished the body and have repaired the dashboard ready to install into the cowl. However the steering column that I have came out of a 4 door touring sedan and the mounting bracket where the column bolts to the dash is much further back than the dashboard. I can adapt the mounting and lock by moving it along the column tube, but .......
Can anyone tell me please, whether the touring sedan and phaeton steering columns are different lengths and if so please can you advise the correct length of the phaeton column from the steering box to the steering wheel end. Many thanks Viv. |

Re: 1935 Ford steering column question.
I could be wrong, have been before, however, I think that all of the '35-36 chassis were basically the same regardless of what body was put on them.
I have a complete and original unmolested 35-36 steering gear box, that came out of a 36 station wagon. The shaft measures 34-3/8" from the top of the box, where the column jacket slides over the collar on the steering box.

Maybe you have a 38-39 sector shaft and tube?

Hi Viv, You're really doing a big job on this Phaeton!
Can you post some photos of the pieces you're working with? I'm pretty sure someone will spot what's going on.

I managed over the weekend to screw it onto the cowl top wood, bolt up the steering column in place and reshape the ends of the dash, it now fits. I shall be putting on some pictures soon, of my car before I started and as it is now, they will be in a future post. Best rgards Viv. |
