Thermostats for 50 model 8BA?
At the risk of starting another restrictor/vs/thermostat/vs/no thermostat discussion..... My question is more along the lines of where do they mount? Do they mount "in the hoses" as per some pages I have read? Or, do they mount in the water necks on the front of the heads? Mine has nothing right now, and had nothing when I took the hoses off after the truck sat for 30 years+/-. Sometimes it's pretty hard to discern between pre and post 48 info on these threads. To the point where I believe there should be separate early and late flathead forums. Anyway, what do I order, and where do they go?
Likewise for parts dealers for these engines. Trying to order the correct parts takes some diligence for sure. |

Yes they fit in the output castings. The stats from a SBC fit. I run 180.

But, if you're actually going to drive your car in hot weather I would recommend the Robert Shaw 330-160 full flow - high flow thermostats here: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/br...FRWRfgodHLsAMw

Re: Thermostats for 50 model 8BA?
I doubt the thermostats shown on summits ad are Robertshaw thermostats. Plus the ad says all copper and brass. The ones shown have a composition metal top. Robertshaw went out of the thermostat business years ago. Some off shore company made the ones shown and there have been reported problems. At one time summit sold the original Robertshaw copper and brass stats. Bob shewman purchased a large number of the original Robertshaw 330-180 all brass and copper stats. Contact [email protected] 180 is the perfect operating temperature for the flatheads. Other stats have a small flow opening and cause a restriction of water flow. G.M.

I use a Stant #45358 purchased from Autozone. Been using them for years with no problems. They are 180 stats.
