Default Crooked fan? mounting seems tilted to the right?

The whole time I have been working on this 8BA, this has had me a little nervous. The whole fan assembly is crooked? It's cocked horizontally towards the passenger's side about two to three degrees. The fan, pulley, shaft, and even the piece it's mounted to. Do I need the whole assembly? The generator/fan mount part with the adjusting slots in it?

And a second question: Is the fan hub all hard mounted together, does it have some kind of dampening inside, like rubber, etc? I am just asking because the whole thing seems to be rather involved for just a hard mount?

I think I answered my second question. Yet another thing to disassemble and rebuild. Oh well, taking it all in now. Now for the crooked thing, hmmm.

Hard to believe something like this could bend. Maybe something else is going on? Possibly it's cracked on the driver's side?

Sounds like the generator front mount is not sitting down into the grove in the intake manifold. Loosen the nut quite aways and seat the generator in the slot. G.M.

If the engine fell over when it was out or came from a vehicle that was in a wreck would explain a bent shaft. Easy enough to take apart and the shaft if bent would be easy to see.

The generator is straight as an arrow. It only seems that the shaft clamp is crooked, all the way out to the front of the fan. The angle of the shaft doesn't change abruptly upon leaving the clamp. I'm going to do some investigating this evening I guess.

Under the 8BA fan mounting nut there is suppose to be a square washer that fits in between the two legs of the fan mounting bracket and helps align the entire assembly. Sometimes this nut is missing or not seated properly, thereby throwing your fan out of alignment. You can see this nut in the photos below. Go ahead and remove your belts and the generator. Then you can check it all out. I made a little round spacer that goes under the BIG NUT and rests against the square washer. Click on photo to enlarge.

The square washer is there thank goodness. It would spin with the big nut, is that supposed to happen if the fan bracket isn't there?. I imagine the fan bracket is what keeps it in position.

The fan is now lined up with the crank pulleys. I think it was a combination of a 2-3 things. The shaft clamp was not tightened all the way, or at least not as tight as I thought it should be anyway. It may have been allowing the shaft to sit crooked in the clamp once a load was put on it. Second, the generator is angled somewhat to the left in the "yoke".

The difference in the fan angle to the gen. is much closer now, but the generator isn't lined up with any other pulleys. It's about half the angle of before though, so a loosening and repositioning of the gen. is probably called for now. Surprising no bolts were stuck either. The fan spins pretty nicely on the shaft, and doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere. I will refill it with oil and see what happens down the road.

Now that both belts are removed, I guess now would be a good time to find replacements. If I have time Sunday afternoon, I will take the bracket assembly back apart and blast/paint ALL the parts, clean the bolts up, and reinstall the belts if I can find them. The auto parts store I part time for has a pretty impressive belt inventory. They may be hanging on the shelf in the back. We would always be looking for oddball compressor belts, lawnmower belts, and we could usually find them.

Check to make sure the little pin in the top of the generator bracket is sitting in the correct hole on the bottom of the generator case.

Don't fill the fan hub with oil...

I read the directions on Van Pelts. That's what I meant by filling it. The one ounce. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

My next plan. Got to go buy another set of SAE Allen wrenches.

Good to go on all pulleys now! I loosened the bolt on the generator clamp, wiggled it a bit, and it fell right in to place. I have belts on order at the store. One coming from the Dallas distribution center, and one from the manufacturer. I oiled the fan, and turned it over to drain the excess. The first time I spun it fast it clipped my pinky nail. I thought it spun okay before, now it's completely freewheeling. The only resistance is the weight of the fan.
