Default 41 axle shaft query

All,

When I was pulling the rear drums on my very stock 41 Super Deluxe convert, I noticed that left and right hub nuts are a different size and thread.

These are the nuts that hold the drum to the shaft.

Left side axle thread is 9/16 UNF taking a 7/8 socket.

Right side axle thread is 5/8 UNF (I think) taking a 15/16 socket.

Adding to my curiosity is the the left side axle has two keyways - one on each side. One is narrower than the other.

I'm assuming the Left axle is either an orphan or a kluge. What say you?

My other query is what torque setting should be applied to the smaller nut? I'm going to 150 ft/lbs for the 5/8 side.

Repair of damaged threads is one possibility, but that doesn't really explain the second keyway unless the other one shows some damage.

That would explain the smaller axle thread I guess. Not sure about the second keyway however...

I'm in the process of changing out the right side axle on my 41. A previous owner had done the same thing to the threads on it. They really looked messed up, and I think the axle is bent. Won't drive one that I can't trust. You should fix it so you can drive without the worry. Axle should be torqued to 200 lbs. everyone says to drive it a little then re-torque, that's what I plan to do. Al

The threads are in OK shape, but I'm not keen on the reduced size thread and nut.

I'm in the market for a replacement rear end. I'll refurbish and install. Not that I plan to drive much 'till then, I have installed drum retainers for peace of mind and will watch this nut like a hawk.
