Re: Rareist Henry Ford Flathead V-8 Prototype engine
I believe most if not all the prototypes ended up in the mill bld and were sold at auction in the early 80's

Several prototype V8's at Speedway. They have a great Ford museum!

Probably the rarest imho is the '42 Mercury Liquamatic transmission motor. 1 only known to exist. It is on display at the Early Ford V8 Musem in Auburn Indiana.

Re: Rareist Henry Ford Flathead V-8 Prototype engine
As I recall they used to have a prototype flathead at one of the buildings at the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village. Has been many years since I was there so I could be wrong. Maybe a recent visitor will chime in.

I think more of them are at Speedway then the Henry Ford Museum. They acquired 2 or 3 from a guy here in the Pacific North West. He loaned them to our Regional Group when we put on a Western National Meet in 2006 and later he passed away.

Brendan, If I recall correctly, that engine block is unique as well. The whole complete assembly was found in a shipping box, ready to send back to Ford, but never got sent.

Re: Rareist Henry Ford Flathead V-8 Prototype engine
I think the rarest would be the proto. that had a top rear of the block mtd. starter and exhaust ports at the back of both cyl. banks. I am sure it was one that was sold. There also is a proto. X engine at the garage of Henry's house.

Visited the Henry Ford in September last year located next to a 32 Cabriolet on display is a very early V-8 block with the top center starter mount location. Another odity the intake ports are also different they were a Siamese design that block is about the size of V-8 sixty. The curator said the block was found buried outside the shop at Fords home where these early blocks were being built in secret. At the Speedway Museum last year I saw the same type of prototype block but this one was a larger version. |

In 2006, this man was selling an X8 engine to help with the hospital expenses of his daughter. Last edited by keith oh; 05-29-2017 at 04:12 PM. Reason: Adding pictures |

Re: Rareist Henry Ford Flathead V-8 Prototype engine
I have several 59 type engines with X-3 or X-5 or other X numbers with
raised cast numbers on the top of the bell housing. If I recall they may have the raised intake decks. G.M.

Re: Rareist Henry Ford Flathead V-8 Prototype engine
The pics I seen in the past of the rear mount starter engine had the front and rear exhaust ports on the front and rear of the engine with center port on the side. Not that familiar with early V8s was that something that was ever in production?

Re: Rareist Henry Ford Flathead V-8 Prototype engine
Here is a prototype intake and carb from the Ford archives attempting to do away with the fuel pump. Notice the "EXP" part number for experimental.
