Drove 30mi round trip burned 1qt oil
I could see the blue smoke in my rear view mirror. I’m currently running 20-50 racing oil. Compression is 60lbs for all 8 cylinders, this motor is tired. Should I switch to straight 40 or 50wt oil to get me through car show season? I will either get this motor rebuilt during winter or my other 90% complete one rebuilt.

Straight 40 wt. might help. Your are definitely ready for a rebuild. I've been there and done that with a '38 and burned a quart every 60 miles.

I would just drive the heck out of it. Who knows, it may improve. Some marvels magic oil mixed in may even loosen up some stuck rings. drive it, it can't get worse!

And if it's plum wore out and Skip's spirited driving advice doesn't help, then I might suggest running a cocktail of equal amounts of GL4 90wt, STP (high mileage), John Deere Cornhead grease and Crisco. If the motor lasts into the fall, substitute a couple bottles of wesson oil for the crisco.

Re: Drove 30mi round trip burned 1qt oil
Nope... Left all that stuff behind on Aug 22, 2022. Never looked back, so I'll need to conjure up some other excuse. And Tim, the cooking grease helps cover the smell of burnt 90W. The main drawback to this 'cocktail' is that you need to have the engine running, fold in the new ingredients slowly while draining the old oil, then leave the engine running 24/7 or you'll never get it started again.
But seriously folks, in fairness to the OP, I would go with straight 50 wt from the cheapest source possible and a can of STP wouldn't hurt..

If the OP goes with Gary's earlier cocktail I sure hope I'm not the one to get the rebuild job.
