Default blown engine adventure continues

I made it to AZ with a new engine. Had to come across country the most Southern route, to avoid bad weather. Normally, I don't mind any weather, but I was towing a trailer this trip. Lost a day of travel time when I had a major brake failure on my S-10 PU. I took me about two extra days as the coastal/Southern route is much longer. Seven, 10+ hour days. Coming across Texas on 10, I had such a headwind, I could barely keep it over 50 MPH without the trans kicking down into second gear. 8 MPG's that day.

Anyway, I made it and got the new engine installed by noon last Saturday.
Now I'm tweaking it for the trip to Pomona for the GNRS this weekend.

The # 4 & 8 crank journal cracked like I've never seen before.
This is a poor picture, but you can see the crack.

Sorry Lee. I've got to make the best of a bad situation.

You bet it is, Ron. It's like having an old friend with me again. Now I'm gonna drive it like it was stolen, for a proper break in. Don't worry, I'll try not to break it.

What was the "collateral" damage?

Pete, all I did was pull the rod caps to take a picture of the damage. I won't really get to tear it down until mid-late March when I get back home. I don't dare mess up my friends garage in AZ taking an engine apart. It's too neat and clean and I'm a slob.

I'm glad Walt got it back together for you, I was worried it might spend the rest of it's life under your bench. It's been 10 years since we built that engine, but it seems like yesterday. Good luck, have fun.

It had been really bothering me that that good old 21 studder was sitting in the corner gathering dust. Walt said he'd be happy to go thru it for me.
Sure was good to have a good spare when you need it.
Ten years, wow. It does seem like yesterday.

Wayno,
My return trip is totally weather driven. Heading home early March. RT 10 to where ever it's not snowing. Maybe Florida for the barner bash in Tampa. Maybe rt 40 to 81 in Tenn if they have dry roads. Lots of time to think about it.

Paul, early March is almost Spring. If you were to head up I-15 to I-70 you would be welcome for a visit to the RODGE MAHAL. To my thinking it's a much nicer drive than I-10. Wayno

... Sounds like this rules out a visit to the Stromberg burial grounds.

Wayno,
I know what "almost Spring" is like in New England. I don't think I dare chance it this trip. Thanks for the offer.....I'll be back this way again, for sure.

Max,
A vist to your place is on my bucket list. We'll make a connection one of these days.
