Johnny Cash Car
I thought I had a straight up 30 Std. Coupe but the further we get into it the more I question that assumption. The engine is Aug '29, the 45B body is late '30 with a 29 deck lid. Interior panels are deluxe while the seat shows standard fabric. Bumper clamps were a mix of 29/30. One set of the rear bumpers has a different curvature than the other. That is just the stuff that I picked up as a rank amateur. The lesson is that it takes a high degree of knowledge to get a correct car.
I am left with a couple of questions. What are the differences between the Standard and Deluxe coupes? Can anyone explain the mismatched rear bumpers? The difference is subtle and was unnoticeable to me while on the car and I can find nothing in the judging standards to give me a clue. |

Re: Johnny Cash Car
Sounds like my truck. After 3 years, I finally got the correct '31 headlight bar on it yesterday.

Re: Johnny Cash Car
The slant windshield rear bumpers had a different curve to them. You might have one of those on your car.

Re: Johnny Cash Car
A Deluxe Coupe has cowl lights, dome light, woodgrained dash and trim, deluxe upholstery such as Bedford Cord or Mohair, has deluxe interior door handles and escutcheons. The Standard Coupe does not have cowl lights, no dome lamp, trim is not woodgrained but painted, has brown check upholstery and has plain interior door handles and escutcheons. The later Deluxe Coupe may have a roll-down rear window. Either may have a rumble seat, one could have that as an option. I am going from memory here so there may be some additions to what I am stating. Bumpers are the same on either car. Oh, the Deluxe Coupe would have a carpet, the Std has a rubber floor mat.

Re: Johnny Cash Car
The slant windshield bumpers won't fit a straight windshield coupe. The slant bumpers are made for the narrow fenders of the slant sedans and hit the wider fenders on a coupe/roadster. I tried to put a set of slant bumpers on my cabbie when I was restoring it but even on it they hit and it is a slant windshield car. The slant bumpers will only fit a 31 slant windshield 4 door sedan or 400-A or Victoria.

Re: Johnny Cash Car
It refers to a spoof song by Johnny Cash that describes how, while working at a Cadillac plant, he built a complete car by sneaking parts out over 20 years. So when he was done he had a "49-50-51-52-53-54 (and so on)" Cadillac. That is, a car assembled from pieces from several years.

Re: Johnny Cash Car
Asymmetrical. Of course, one of these days I'll ask a question for which the answer is not embarrassing. Thanks guys. At least I now know there are two types of bumpers and have a good idea of the differences between Std and Deluxe.

Re: Johnny Cash Car
As you may know, He actually built the car described in the song. I saw it at what used to be his museum in Hendersopnville several years ago.
