Default flathead torque tube bearing

I have a 1940 Tudor sedan that has a vibration around 45 mph.
Tire balance is good
So think it is torque tube bearing that is failing.
Any one have a replacement and instructions as to how to remove and install
Thanks

How are the wheel bearings, both front and rear?

Vibrations and noise will travel up and down that rear drive line making it very difficult to pinpoint the exact problem and its location. In the past, I've sometimes had to tear down the complete rear to find the exact problem, and sometimes I've found more than one issue that was causing that problem.

It might turn out to be that the u-joint is coming apart.

arc 40' : grease the torque tube center bearing and see if it sounds less noisey.
Then you'll have an idea.

Is there any way you could safely jack the rear wheels off the ground, start the engine in first gear and then as you let the clutch pedal out have someone listen the the torque tube center bearing by using a stethescope against the torque tube center bearing grease nipple?

had a bad vibration in a 36 sedan, turned out the u-joint needed grease and a lot of it!

If all else fails, Skip Haney sells a replacement for the torque tube bearing.

I'm using a Skip Haney bearing. You can find him at fordcollector.com
You can drive the old bearing out the back of the tube with a piece of pipe and a big hammer. It comes hard because it is wrapped in rubber which tends to bounce. Follow the instructions for aligning it so the hole in the rubber lines up with the grease fitting. Driving the new one in proved nearly impossible while keeping it aligned. I used a home made tool to press it in easily. Later today I'll go take some pictures of what I used.

If you can obtain a NOS or good bearing and borrow the KRW tool to install it, it is a simple job. In my MISC album there are pictures of the tool. It both removes and installs the bearing. When installing I put a grease fitting in the TT and the tool has an arrow that you sight down and line up with the grease fitting (hole), a little lube on the rubber and it pulls in real nicely. The bearing rubber collar has a protrusion that fits into a notch on the tool so it can't rotate while installing and the hole in the rubber for grease to get to the bearing lines up perfectly with the hole in the TT. If you lived near me I would come help if you found a NOS bearing. I used up what I had on my 40s.

You can make a tool using 1/2" or larger all thread rod and some washers and nuts. Hardest part is removing the torque tube.

arc40s: Do a search on
Torque Tube center bearing" and read every thread.
Here's a good start:

Here is the tool I made. It will pull the pinion, press the pinion in, or press driveshaft center bearing in. The last photo shows how it would be configured to press the bearing in. The pipe is only used to press the bearing. It is 32 3/4" of 2" plastic pipe. The plate is 3/8 thick. I used a gasket to make the hole pattern.
