Re: Stupid paint question...
As long as it is the same basic product. Catalyzed Urethane clear over catalyzed urethane primer, color irrelevant. I personally wouldn't use lacquer primer on a garbage can.

Re: Stupid paint question...
Just make sure you use FLAT clearcoat. If you add any gloss it just looks like paint (paint that peels). But primer by itself looks great, I have never seen a reason to candy coat it. If someday the primer starts to wear off, spray a little more over the top, and get back in and go for a drive. It dries best at 50 mph plus.

Re: Stupid paint question...
I think someone makes a semi-flat or satin top coat for this very application. I would search the HAMB for I recall a few threads about this.

Re: Stupid paint question...
Well in that case I don’t know. ‘Corse I don’t know about red either nor black but at least I know what color primer your thinking of using.

Re: Stupid paint question...
Last year, I painted the frame and a bunch of parts, all in mix it up urethane, sprayed with a gun. I'm not really looking forward to doing that all over on a grander scale with the body. The body's from Brookville and it's still bare metal except I rattle canned the bottom and interior. The color of the bare metal is growing on me and just shooting a coat or two of grey primer and getting it on the road is attractive.

Not sure the cost involved but what about ceramic clear coat? Would last longer than a wax and would prevent corrosion with a durable finish. I think it's just applied with a sponge. I've seen guys use this ceramic coating for rims with good results.
