Re: What Model A part was the hardest to take apart?
I tried taking a speedometer apart. I got it apart, in lots of little pieces. That pot metal just crumbles sometimes

Shock covers and shock inner covers are the most stubborn parts so far, followed closely by the bolts at the ends of the bumper bars.

The most stubborn and time consuming for me where the little screws in the windshield frame. After weeks of PB blaster and a pin point torch to heat to cherry red several times they finally unscrewed.

Spring perches for sure. I had to drill and chisel them out.

Is it a good/bad idea to use heat to get the spring perches off?

Re: What Model A part was the hardest to take apart?
So far for me it was replacing brake drums. The studs can be removed with a hollow end mill and a small press but replacing them required a swedging tool and a 50 ton press. (I found 22 tons to be perfect).
On one of mine some long ago PO tightened them up by brazing the studs in. This caused one of the new ones not to seat perfectly for replacement. It came flying off the press past me at about 100 mph. Not a job for the faint of heart. P.S. The fronts fit on modern brake lathes but nobody in my area can turn the rear drums with the hubs mounted I just had to have the rears turned unmounted and hope for the best |

Removing the pinion bearing (the one closest to the gear teeth) from the pinion gear. Had to cut it off with a Dremil tool.

Ah, the miracle of air chippers. Some of you who have not tried this are missing out, but the part is more often damaged if one had intended re-use. Somehting about a
hammering vibration sure can work miracles, though. Tightest thing I recall was an oxygen bottle cap which had been crossthreaded just a little bit. 8 foot of pipe cheater and an additional 4 within it with a bar! |
