No, the bolt goes in from the bottom up, then the radiator tabs setting on the frame welt (made from various scrap) then the spring on top of the tab, then the castle nut and cotter pin. BTW my original welt between the radiator tabs and crossmember is made from brake lining that has been rolled thin.

The springs allow frame flex without putting stress on the radiator.

Do you have the correct style starter bushing and U bolts?

What time period is you car?

Do you have the radiator pads in place? Mine are about 1/8" to 3/16" thick and fit right under the radiator tabs. Also when Ford started the lower crossmember pads is late 29 they added a 1/4" shim to make up the difference for the remainder of 29 style radiator production.

My 28 doesn't show the raised mounting area of the crossmember real well, but the mounting pad is level with the bottom of the top frame rail. In about September 1929 the mounting pad was lowered 1/4" and an additional shim was added to make up that 1/4". I don't know why Ford didn't just wait until the new taller radiator was out before they lowered the mounting pad.

Yep, that information is in the J/S and states sometime after March 1929 the lower tank was made larger by angling the bottom of the tank. About mid 1929 a recess was put into the rear edge of the top tank to make room for the rivets.

Does this look like the correct tension for the rad springs?

I just wasn't sure if I should crank them down a little more for the head to fit inside the nut and bend the cotter pin over the stud or to bend them around the nut as the attached picture. Since the manuals all say "tighten until you can just get a cotter pin installed."
