I feel dirty
Nooooooooo!!
Just watched (sort of) a perfectly good Tudor body get chopped via a Model A Facebook site of which I am a member. Almost feels like I aided and abetted just by “being there”. |

Re: I feel dirty
I used to feel that way too but.....
There are so many cars that sit around and never get on the road. If they chop it and put a hot running gear under it AND get it driving and enjoy It's better than mice, spiders and other vermin enjoying it Besides the owner may make a more valuable car than restoring a tudor Just MHO |

Re: I feel dirty
That chop was nicely done. Looks like about 4". A well done hot rodded model A will always bring more money that a restored stock one. Many cars that get chopped and/or hot rodded are too far gone to be worth restoring (cost too much to restore and aren't worth enough when they are done) so, like Oldbluoval said, better that than leaving them to go back to dust. I have and appreciate both stock and rodded model A's but I do admit that I get a bit emotional when I see someone chop and/or hot rod a VERY nice original or restored car

Re: I feel dirty
In my stock Tudor, I have a hard time seeing traffic signals when I am stopped at a light. I am not the tallest person in the world at 5'9". I have to crouch down. How the heck can someone see traffic lights when several inches have been chopped off? They must have to modify the seats too!

With that said I would not and have never cut up a nice Model A. But I believe people should have that right. Of the 25 Model A,s that I have redone, most were made from junk or parts. |

Re: I feel dirty
Like others, I also admire some of the work done by hot rodders but would never do it myself.
Before a hot rod is put on the road here, it must be inspected by an engineer and certified as safe. I have NO PROBLEM with that. Chopping a body like that would not pass inspection.

Re: I feel dirty
I am a hot rodder, but also cringe at chopping original Model A bodies for a fad.
I fitted 30 stainless stanchions to my 28 ,and had a set of rough windscreen posts that I could have quite easily chopped, but as they have survived for 85 years, I let them rest on the shelf, and made some lower stanchion brackets out of some RHS. I did not have a spare windscreen frame, so I made one from scratch as it had to be lower than standard . If I did have an original frame, unless it was so far gone, I would not have chopped that either. I just hope these dudes put those chopped sections in a box and keep them for the next dude in case he wants to resurrect the roof. I had a very nice cowl tank, and I put that away and bought a rusted out lump to cut the bottom out of. I also cringed when a while later, I salvaged a cut out section of a 31 tank from the scrap bin of a local hot rod shop. It was like shiny new inside. The terne plate was all there with just a hint of brown fuel stain. I actually kept it for a couple of years , dunno what for, it would never be welded back into anything, and finally junked it so I would not have to cringe everytime I looked at it. |

Re: I feel dirty
I agree with George miller in post #6 I have built my collection from cars that others didn't want . Most of mine didn't run or hadn't run in many years when I bought them . I have never chopped any of mine . I have only made mods that could easily be returned to stock .

Re: I feel dirty
At least there are plenty of Model A's to go around. Some to be restored, some to be left original, and some to be modified.

Re: I feel dirty
abortions dont necessarily need a sawzall..take this '26 T speedster 1926 Ford Model T Speedster, a restored example that not only looks great but runs well, Complete and ready for its new owner. Electric Fuel pump added and just serviced..... why no respecting T speedster owner would be caught dead without this book in the treasure chest.. |

Re: I feel dirty
I bought a like new tool box for a 29 De luxe Delivery from a guy that had hotrodded a high point restoration and was putting in modern seats so he no longer needed the tool box that goes under and behind the passenger seat. Never could have found that part if he hadn't hotrodded a beautiful car. Lucky for me they exist.

Re: I feel dirty
Not to change the subject but I thought the "deluxe delivery" was only 30-31 and that the 28-29's were "sedan deliveries". Did they actually make a '29 deluxe delivery?.

Re: I feel dirty
I was walking back out of my shed just now, and my gaze briefly landed on this randomly placed assortment of bits. (Sorry, you’ll have to rotate it).
For a millionth of a microsecond, my head asked: “Hmm. Ratrod?” What was I thinking? My heart quickly said: “Nah!”. I blame this thread. |
