Lawson Cox just rebuilt one over the winter for his 36 p/me/up.
Maybe he will chime in.

Yes, I just rebuilt a Jr. Model. I was fortunate to locate all nos parts to do it with, thanks to my buddy Jerry Grayson. It puts out so much heat it will make you open some windows PDQ. I would recommend a Jr. model for coupes and pickups.

I seem to have lost my picture posting abilities, but I have some dressing up to do of the firewall cover before posting pictures.

Oh, 31 flamingo, it's a 35. lol

Nice pic Tony, earlier I did a thread search on the Barn and found a lot of good posts on this heater.

Lawson good to hear it works so well. I mostly paid attention to 38/39 and flathead related threads, just another reason to pay more attention.

Bill Cannon (Southwind Guru) wrote an excellent article for Skinned nuckles several years. All Stewart Warner ever mentioned about gas mileage was "Fuel consumed by operation of the heater affects the gas mileage by less than one mile per gallon."

Cannon did a lot of fancy math (way above my head) about heat out put under various temperatures and came up with the conclusion that at full operation at 7.800 btu per hour required 0.078 gallons of fuel per hour and at half heat of 3,900 btu per hour or 0.039.

So the Southwnd put out a lot of heat with minimal effect on MPG.

I agree with Lawson, and the heat output of the fuel burned is almost 100% released to the interior of the car for comfort heating. On the other hand the amount of fuel burned in the enginr used for power is about 1/3 while 1/3 is lost to the cooling system including oil and the other 1/3 is lost out the exhaust. So not a bad return on the cost of gas for heating.

Bringing this thread back up. I got this heater running on 12V since the pickup was previously converted to 12v.. It took $4.00 worth of resistors to do so. Two 2 ohm 25 watt resistors in parallel (1 ohm 50 watt)then wired in series to the igniter. One 6 ohm 25 watt resistor wired in series to the fan motor. I might reduce the resistor to increase the fan speed. This one started making heat in a little over a minute. Here is a picture of it installed in the pickup. I will be taking the truck out more this winter on the dry days.

I don't know, if you were here in ND right now, you would want the biggest Southwind you could find. -8 and -22 windchill. Used to keep the riffraff out, but the Bakken brought it all in.

I had a girl friend a long time ago from North Dakota that said the same thing about the extreme cold keeping the riffraff out, no homeless there.

Thanks for posting pics Chuck, I have a nice one that I got from Toby on my trip to VT. Will mount it but just have it for a conversation piece.

The 39 will be a three season vehicle

The automobile in the "South Wind" ad looks like a 1949 Cadallic. In 1953 Detroit factory workers were making about $1.65 an hour! $29.95 devided by $1.65 come to about 18 hours of work for a heater, not installed.

I was there!
