Default Jailbar Ranch

My son and I were moving vehicles around this afternoon while cleaning out some sheds. I decided it would be a good afternoon for a line-up. They all started up perfectly and are ready for the open road. Plan is to get caught up with our work load and head out for a Fall road trip..... Now to get caught up.......

The sets of the 'teeth' are getting very expensive. Chrome repros are many hundreds of dollars. The 'teeth' are specific to location. Newc

I’m seeing the likelihood of needing to add a second Tonner as a bed and fender donor. Can’t have just one. Stu

I'd call it "Jailbar Heaven". In 1960 a friend had a 46 p/u with a "full race" 59A in it & chrome stacks. I have loved Jailbars ever since. Thanks 4 sharing GB !

A 46 I am working on for a widow:
Just did my annual maintenance thing and got a new inspection sticker. She keeps it in a garage (heated) and gets driven by only me for 100+ miles per year. I will take it out next month to check the steering. It wanders down the road.

But if you're a cabinet maker you make them out of wood, right GB?

All of these teeth are factory ford, but let's just say I HAVE considered wood on occasion. Thanks to all for the nice comments. I know they aren't as desirable as a lot of the prewar models, but jailbars have remained within my budget and seem to land here. I have enough parts trucks in my lower 5 acres to build another nice tonner PU with an H six, perhaps a stakebed. The six is on a rolling cart in my shop and was pulled by a friend's father from a half ton panel after a minor crash. I hear the H is a good engine.

I spent most of four days at Iola this past week and found precious few parts for Jailbars. A couple hoods is all. I shoulda bought one of them but didn’t. Kick my self now. I guess it’s just a fact, as you alluded to, they find you. Stu

Tom McCahill of "Mechanics Illustrated" liked 'em. Here's what he said :

“When it comes to breaking fast from a traffic light or snap passing on the highway, the Six can make the V-8 look as loggy as your Aunt Tillie after a hard day’s shopping in Macy’s bargain basement,” wrote Tom. Regarding mid-range performance, he said: “The Ford Six can tear the ears of the V-8 in acceleration and performance, right up to 75 mph.” But “Above 82 or 83 mph, the Ford six flattens out like a Chinese pancake… it finally lays down and dies at about 91 or 92 mph tops.” The Ford Six proved to be economical, too, by winning its class in the Grand Canyon economy run.

He sure had a way with words.

I find it interesting that only one (I think) has escaped major mods: Woodie body, Diesel transplant, Toyota transplant. But, they're all neat, especially the modifieds.

Guess that was a question for me. It was back to normal attendance, with perfect weather after rain on the Wednesday set up day. Sold out all my stuff early and didn’t buy much. So came home with more money than I took. Hard to beat that. Stu

Gary,
They look great! I think they may even be starting to grow on me a little more too.
I dont remember seeing any of these around my area. Now I know why! You have all of them!
Great work you do keeping these old Fords moving and looking good too! Seen your posts over on FTE.
Seems that a lot of us frequent both sites.
Regards,
Chris

The "jailbars" are part of my history. This one was my first "wheels" as a kid in 1968. Seen here beside my uncles's 49 Merc. The jailbar was converted into a wagon about 1971 but I still have all the sheet metal. Grille displayed on the door of my workshop.

Could not help the "wanders" part of the post. With bias tires mine wants to go it's own way too. I did change out the drag link end and the tie rod seems tight enough so you need keep bust with the steering wheel !

I had a post here titled 'Prone to Wander'.... Some of the guys recognized it as an old Baptist Hymn.....( Don't ask me why I know about that ).... But.... radial tires solved it so well. I LOVE bias ply tires. I probably have 50 of them here on my 10 acres. I love doing king pins and front end stuff. Leaf springs with new bushings etc, but Nuttin' ever did as much as switching to radials. On my red diesel tonner I have michelliun 7.50 x 17 radials just on the front. Bias snow on the rear. YES, I know you aren't s'posed to mix them up but at 40 mph and all drum manual brakes I'm fine. The woodie has 4 radials.... Now my wife likes driving it too!

There's a lot to be said for radials. I still like the look of the old bias ply's, but every time I buy new ones, I wonder why, as I have had one old car with radial's that drove like a new car once installed. That was long ago, an old chevy, which after blowing up all the 600 16's i could find I switched to junk yard 15" wheels with radials...darn kids.

We have a yacht club?... I've heard we do but it's on the other end of the island. like about two light years away. We have one of the Grandkids for the weekend and that's about as exotic as me and my wife get. Oh wait, we are going off the island by ferry boat next week to see my cardiologist. That is like 4 times in 2 years leaving the island. Now, THAT's exotic.

I was planning to , but then I rememberd I was gonna be busy that day sticking pins in my eyes.....

Edit: Sorry for being rude about this. I went to a dinner there once and felt quite snubbed by the folks there. Could have been because I was wearing my old work clothes.

No offense taken.
My friend lives in Deer Harbor.
He started coming to the island in 1979.
They have lived full time here since 1995.

Nice collection! I used to think anything after 1940 is "too new" but they're growing on me. I didn't know Ford made a jail-bar-based woodie. Or is it a post-production modification?

That is a cool truck... I have a couple of model A cowls sitting around... Hey, don't get me started.

And maybe add some tires like this?

I was thinking the same concept on a jail bar but yeah, a Model A would be cool. The Special Delivery was an offshoot of the Station Wagon and was produced for only one year (1931) by Ford. Or you could try another offshoot - the Travelers Wagon, a Model A RV. Less than a dozen produced and no known survivors:

That car is well-known, at least among Model A'ers. It was used in the 30s for mail delivery in Montana, hence the tractor tires for plowing through snow. Not sure a convertible was the best choice for winter but I guess they used what they had in the depression. Ford did make Model A and AA dedicated mail trucks:

Wow! Really cool. Is that a fold down wash basin inside the left rear door? Perhaps an amenity so the wife would agree to go along on the trip.

Yes, it had the fold-down basin, a fold-down bed, a storage chest, and a water tank in the roof (you can see the bottom of it above the chest). The screens in the back windows were about like chain-link fence - ventilation but no bug protection. It did have roll-down curtains that covered the screens and roll-up windows in the doors (unusual for woodies of that era). Dunno if it's true but I've heard they went to explorers in South America.
