Default OOOPS I think I had a senior moment!

Did ya ever have one of these moments?

I was repainting some engine components. I pulled the oil fill tube out to paint it.

Then I thought it would be a nice idea for my wife and I to go out for an ice cream. So we drove about 20 miles and pulled into the ice cream place. I noticed some oil on my step plate and running board. Not a big deal, grabbed some paper towels in the trunk and cleaned it up. I wondered well where did that come from.

Then I noticed that the spare tire was covered with oil. Then I noticed that the hood fins were dripping oil, and that leaked oil all over the fender. I picked up the left hood and saw that the firewall was just dripping in oil, and as wet was the steering column, starter, drip pans, and engine.

I lost about a quart and a half. But the hot fudge sundae was great, and my wife offered to help clean up the mess.

I can top that.. when I was ? ~30 I lost my wallet... I traveled for work about 50% of the time for 4 years so not having it was a BIG PROBLEM!.. I looked and looked.. could not find it... So I had to replace everything in it... SS card, drivers license, CC cards etc... (this after I looked and looked and looked for it...)

About 1 month after getting all things replaced, I noticed on top of my black TV a black bump... YES IT WAS MY WALLET!!!

So Senior or not we all have had moments like those! or maybe I just travel too damn much at the time...

Doc I keep on losing my car keys am I having a senior moment? Cuz I'm new at this. I've never been old before this my first time. My doctor looked in my eyes and said " losing the keys isn't a problem that's normal, when you forget what their for that's a problem "

I sometimes forget to wear my pants out in public. However, the good people at Wally World are all so caught up in showing off their ugly tats, multi-colored hair, metal art work stabbed through their noses or their body parts, pants on the ground, two isles wide fat rears and so forth that they don't even notice so all is right with the world when I do that. Heck, an' that is just the cashiers there.

Just joking though............ :-)

I took off my horn the other day to find out what parts were missing on it and to check out the wires and all. Well, the wires to the bullet connectors were frayed and broken in places so I thought I'd change them out, but we had guests for the holiday. I put everything inside the hood and closed it so I could come back later and finish off the job.

Well, my son-in-law wanted to go about the neighborhood for a drive and I was excited to take him. We headed off and on the very first stop, we notices smoke coming out from behind the instrument panel. Come to find out one of those bullet ends had touched the engine and shorted the wiring out. Burned the wires in several places and smoked up things pretty good before we could unhook it all. The wiring harness needed changing anyway, but I just wasn't expecting it to be because of my actions. Stupid human trick #7,001 for me, but all my own fault. I really don't need many more senior moments like that. Smoke billowing out right under the gas tank and all is not a fun memory, but it sure is a brown shorts moment.

When I replaced the timing gear, I forgot to put in 3 bolts. Took it out for a drive, ran great, but kept smelling oil. Pulled over and it was pouring out the holes in the cover. Radiator fan blew oil everywhere...

I'm 40, It happens to us all.

More than once I have forgotten to screw the Timing Pin back in after setting the ignition. It pumps a lot of oil out of that little hole. Plus, that Timing Pin is not something you can pick up at the hardware store. I now keep spares.

I did that once, so now I reinstall the timing pin as soon as I feel the dimple.

Yup, did that yesterday. Didn't drive too far before thinking I might not have put it back. Should have stopped but blew more oil around. Many others too embarrassed to mention!

haha, ive done this on my chevette before. Just changed oil and left the oil fill cap off the valve cover as I figured it would need more. Checked dipstick, it didnt need anymore so down goes the hood and away I went. Now this car is almost impossible to not get oil on the exhaust manifold while adding oil so a little burn off upon startup is normal. Well 12 miles down the road and its not getting any better and a weird film is forming on the windshield it dawned on me.

Luckily the cap that was sitting on the battery fell between the battery and fender so popped cap back on and all was well haha.

MSHMODELA - I used to be mentored by a well seasoned electrician who has 39+ years experience. Well i always joked with him about my other duties one on which was to keep track of his coffee mug that he set EVERYWHERE. One day while working on a robot he lost it and I didn't see where it was. Well 4 months go by and the same robot took a dump again. Opened the electrical panel and looky there! Coffee was supporting life but we found it haha.

The ultimate confession. I spent a winter rebuilding the drivetrain to match up to a rebuilt engine. It fired up and idled perfectly. When I let out the clutch to back out of the garage, the car didn't move. I'd forgotten the new clutch disk.
Even I think it is funny.
Now.

After dealing with my Wife, Pat, with Debilitating Dementia at only 62 years old, I think it's kinda' SICK, to laugh & joke about "senior moments"!
Do we WANT to appear DEMENTED/STUPID, just because we're getting OLD?

As a retired RN who has worked everything from OB to Hospice, I can tell you that there is almost no way to respond to Bill and disagree with his sentiments and conclusion without getting into some sort of negativity argument, but I'll explain why I disagree.

There is one huge difference between self deprecation and putting someone down or even making fun of someone who has a debilitating illness. That difference is often in the eyes of the beholder and the emotions involved instead of taking things at face value and laughing at a joke without trying to read more into it that there ever was. None of the posts here have tried to blame Alzheimer's or dementia for doing the simple act of aging or forgetting as one aged. It happens at any age and at any level. It is often funny and can be a remarkably good tool for others to learn by as long as abuse and putting other's down with intent is not done. Life is funny, but at the same time life is also known to toss people unexpected curve balls. Some sad and some seemingly unjust. To attach emotions needlessly to humor is like failing to understand sarcasm and how it is used. It would be much different if the thread was a mockery to anyone specific who said they had dementia. Otherwise, it is simply all in good fun and also something that all people go through in life. Making mistakes or even forgetting to do something is indeed a part of life and often as not simply a funny part of life.

Having worked with dementia patients for years, I can fully understand how family members, friends and even the loved one can be supersensitive, but if that is the case for anyone, then they really need to back off reading such a post, as their sensitivity level meter is not going to allow them to see or accept the differences explained above.
chiding others about this issue is your right if you feel that way, but it is just as much someone else's right to disagree and view things very differently, too. Making a rationalization that we are "appearing stupid because we are getting old" simply isn't true any more than ignoring the fact that we all age, we all forget things over time, we all can laugh at ourselves for doing so without pigeonholing ourselves as stupid. Removing the term "Senior Moments" from our vocabulary is like trying to make others become PC for no good reason, other to make someone else be in control.

Sorry for your wife's illness, but that said and the emotions gone from discussion of such, I would bet she has also laughed at some point in her past over something she did by simple forgetfulness. (Not dementia) but forgetfulness. That laugh was not because of her making fun of anyone or even herself as a put down, but because it was funny and often fun to see ourselves in a funny lite instead of always so overly serious.

I know that is not what you want to hear or what you wish it to be, but humor is as strong a medicine as any pill or tonic and sometimes the emotions of personal experiences blind us a bit to seeing that. This is why I disagree with what you posted. Right or wrong, I do hope we can all laugh a bit at ourselves and take that for exactly what it is. I believe my funny bone is just as spry as when I was a youth, but my own life experiences make it quicker to get tickled these days.... and sometimes that may not be so easy for someone else to accept. Case in point: I remember children at Scottish Rite Cripple Children's Hospital (Now the name is changed to become PC) who laughed when someone make a booboo in what they said about them. Perhaps it was when someone spoke of a basketball player making a wonderful hoop shot or an ice skater doing a brilliant twirl. It didn't matter to them that they had only one leg or maybe none, but they knew full well that the person had no intent to degrade or besmirch them in any manner. That laughter was contagious and good for everyone. To this very day, it still is, too.

Just my difference of opinion though and i'll add that my mother-in-law lived with us prior to her death at Hospice. She too had debilitation dementia at the end of her life as did my own mother. It is not those memories that I cherish, but those when they laughed and made lite of themselves, instead. The disease is an ugly one and I'd wish it on no one, but that is not who the person really was or what defined them in life. The emotions are usually left for the survivors to contend and deal with and unfortunately that takes time and a lot of it at times.

Coupe I agree 100% with what you said and how you said it.

Bill, my heart goes out to you as to what you must go through. Before my dad passed I had to deal with his dementia, and it hurt.

I poked fun at myself by saying I had a senior moment. It was either that or just plain call my self a dumb ass for being stupid and not paying attention to the business at hand. I have to blame my stupidity on something

Bill.,having a senior moment doesn't have to include dementia, your son Mitch has a senior moment every time he has to change his Depends!!!!

I have a senior moment every time I take a Viagra....or two!!!

GET REAL! "Senior" moments implies that an OLD brain doesn't work right. IF it were called a "STUPID" or "FORGETFUL" moment, that would be OK. SENIOR implies/means OLD! Words are POWERFUL, let's try to use them CORRECTLY!
Thanks for reading my "rant".

OK, for myself, I'll just use the Baby-Boomer Syndrome excuse, where we of that generation are also considered seniors now, where our brains still say YES when our bodies say NO.

We all have these moments and I have a theory to explain it!
I figure that at about the age of 40, brain cells start turning into grey hairs and by the time you have as many grey hairs as I do, there are not many brain cells left.
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Bill W, I am watching two of my friends go through what you went through with your wife. I wouldn't wish that on anybody. The fact that you saw it through is a testament to your character.

When I was doing the speedster rebuilding the rear end. Bearings , seals , ect . Install a t 5 trans . Put the body on he completed frame. Started it up for the first time drive. Put it in a forward gear . All it would do is go in reverse. I had gotten a used t5 trans. Don't tell me I had a bad one. Come to find out it was not the trans . I had put the axel in backwards . Changed it , works fine . Talk about feeling dummmmm.!

Placing the ring gear on the wrong side of the banjo is a very common mistake that I hope to never make that would suck
