40 banjo question

Hi, I've got a question about my 40 ford rear axle assembly. It has a bar connected to a bracket welded to the passenger axle housing. Am I correct in assuming that it is a form of panhard bar? If so, would it be connected to the driver's side chassis rail via a bracket? It has a bushing mounted at the end. Were these common and is it advisable to keep it when I mount the assembly to the chassis? I hadn't seen one like this before. Thanks

Looks like a rear sway bar.

Someone made it . The car the rear was in might have had long lowering shackles . In a pre 1942 car the spring had a lot of tension on it with stock shackles and no need for a panhard bar
1942 to 48 had a stock panhard bar and longer shackles for a smoother ride.

If you got stock shackles , you need a spring spreader.

I would guess someone was wanting to limit side movement such as a race application (or long shackles like skidmarks posted). If the clearance is there to allow movement it should work. And yes, it would mount to a bracket on the frame in the position as it is shown in the photo.

Thanks for the info. I've got stock shackles and plan on keeping the build stock. I think I'll just cut the bracket off so I don't run into any problems with fitting exhaust components and such.

I find a stock Ford seems fine until you fit a panhard rod and discover that potholes no longer make the car dart across the road. Don't cut off the bracket until you've found out whether you can hook it up without difficulty.

Good advice above.....you can always cut off the bracket before or if you decide to paint the axle bells.....if you do use it .....mount it level at ride height is the proper way I believe....Mark
