Default Bendix

I have several "original" spare Bendix drives. I took them apart to inspect them. Two of them were missing the slotted part that fits on the end of the gear assembly (See picture). Were there Bendix drives without that part? Or do I have two drives where that part has been removed? Also what is the function of that part? It moves freely so it is not involved in "locking" the Bendix.

it allows the bendix freedom to move while also having a solid center so the spring is supported evenly so it keeps it's even round shape
